My one year old dog just had her second heat cycle about 3 weeks ago and now her nipples are huge. They have gone from a tiny little thing no bigger than the head of a q-tip (maybe smaller) to almost the size of a quarter. She is being kind of lathargic and needy (wants a lot of atention)lately. Are there any sure sighns or will I ahve to take her to the vets to find out for sure?

Sure sounds like she's pregnant to me. Did she stay with you, in the house, the whole time she was in heat? Or did she run around outside? I don't think you need to take her to the vet..animals are pretty good about being pregnant and being ok without constant visits to a vet. I mean if it makes you feel better, than go for it of course. I'd make plans what was going to happen to the puppies of course...after they are weaned. And then maybe get your dog fixed, being as she was able to experience motherhood. Good luck!

She will definately be fixed, I wanted each of them (we have 2 females) to have one litter than off to the vets. She did run, we live out in the country and dont belive in chaining or caging them so the run all over and there are a number of daddy candidates. I cant realy aford to take her to the vets much so I will wait a while and see how she feels. Thanks !

My dog is also pregnant. That's the first thing you notice when a dog is pregnant. I am used to touching her belly and chest. When she got pregnant, I noticed her nipples were becoming to grow big. When she is always asking for food because she's hungry all the time. Also, you will notice that your dog is not that active anymore. Take good care of her!

Thanks for the info, she doesnt seem to want to eat much but she doesnt want to be touched much on her tummy like she so very much loves (as they all do ). What do you feed her during pregnancy ? I have heard puppy food ?

You have to go to the vets to find out for sure. I'm worried that if you can't afford a vet visit, how are you going to afford to have the puppies? There are a lot of expenses that can go along with pupppies. There are shots, deworming, food, etc, etc. There are a lot of problems that can happen during birth that may require vet care. You should take her to the vet now, and get her spayed.

She will get all the care she needs I just dont want to take her unless I know for sure. The puppies will be fine but our vet charges an oputragous price for a preg test.

Taking your dog to the vet is the only way to know for sure at this point. Other than that, you could just wait it out and see if she gets bigger and bigger. However, I recommend going to the vet ASAP so that you can begin to care correctly for the puppies before they are even born. Are you breeding your dog, or is this an accidental pregnancy?

I would like to have wiated for her to get pregnant, however we live i the country and the dogs run free so I knew it could happen. I was hoping to wait another year or so till my kids were a little older so I could keep one without being overwhelmed.

One of 2 things - she's pregnant or she's having a false pregnancy. I suggest since this is her first time you go to a vet to make sure. That way you can get her some vitamins for the lethargy and make sure she doesnt become anemic.

I will prolly go ahead and do it but I was just wondering if this is something they just do after heat cycles.
