As most of you know I have reciently been diagnosed with Diabetes. I was given the medications of Glipizide and Metaformin. Since I have been taking these medications I have been hungry all of the time, six, seven, eight times a day. It seems like I cannot eat enough but I do not want to gain all of my weight back so I only eat three times a day. My question is this.... Is this normal?!? Is it a by product of the medication? Will it ever stop? I do not like feeling hungry all of the time, I do not want to become overweight again. Any assistance in this querry will be greatly appriciated!

When I was put on glipizide, I didn't feel hungary. I don't take the other medicine you are on. I took diebetes classes and was told to eat four or five times a day, smaller portions. Then your blood sugar will not rise as much as eating three times a day. If you haven't taken diebetes classes at a local hospital, I suggest you do. It answers all of your questions.

I am taking the classes but I just forgot to ask and it is bothering mee right now so I ask. I am not so much worried about the sugar levels but rather the fat and calories as I do not want to gain back all of this weight that I have lost. I went from 285 down to 150 in just a couple years and I do not want to get that way again thus I only eat three meals. Thank you for the response and have a great day!!

They told me at my classes to eat 3 meals a day and space them 4 hours apart. It is tough for me because I am retired and I have no set sleeping habits, so my meal times are really a mess.

I do not know if that is normal or not. But I think your doctor can answer that. How about instead of eating 3 full meals a day, try to eat 6-8 meals in little servings so you will not go very hungry all the time. This will also improve your metabolism as there is food to digest. Just an FYI also and I hope that it will be of great help to you: Did you know that cinnamon could actually reduce the blood sugar levels of diabetics? Here read about cinnamon and its effects on blood sugar: www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn4413 and http://care.diabetesjournals.org/cgi/content/full/26/12/3215

I have tryed this stratigy and I am still hungry all of the time. I tryed to proportion my meals out for 5 or six meals and I am still hungry all the time. It is almost like my blood sugar has been so high for so long that now that it is lower I am always hungry!! I did know about the cinnamon, my Mom, who is a diabetic of 15yrs, told mee about it. I try to incorporate cinnamon into my daily meals. I have a cinnamon stick in my coffee right now. It if kind of rough without the sugar but I like my life!! Thank you for the response and for the helpful information, I will give you the BEST RESPONSE for your efforts. Have a great day!!

my mom's a diabetic and she's been taking metformin, too. but she doesn't have hunger pangs like you do. diabetics are advised to eat 6 times a day. they must have snacks in between meals, so their sugar levels won't drop too low. better ask your doctor about this.

I feel the same way too. I was diagnosed back in July. When I ate certain foods,(the ones I am supposed to) I was fine, but then I started eating everything I ate before I started my meds, thats when I found, I get hungry all the time. I need to go back to the foods that satisfied my food craving, and get back to my weight loss again. I thought Metaformin was good for cutting appitite, the doc told me that I would lose weight by taking it. I don't know. I do know I need to get back into the swing again and lose the weight that I am gaining back.

I am trying my darnest to not gain my weight back and I exercise alot. But god I am always hungry no matter what I do. If I eat what I am supposed to I am hungry all of the time. Hell yesterday I went to an all you can eat buffet and figured I will burn it off by working out a little harder but I would have never thought it I ate till I almost bursted but I was hungry again in about 1hour. I use to be able to go to one of these places and eat and be full all day!! I do not know if I am gaining again or not I will have to make an appointment and find out but god I hope not. Good luck with the getting back to normal! Thank you for the response and have a great day!!

I hae no idea if its normal but perhaps your docrtor should be the one you talk to about your hunger. instead of eating , though, why not try a cup of coffee or tea, sometimes thirst can mimic hunger. And warm liquids fool your stomach into thinking you haveeaten.

I drink coffee quite often for this reason but being diabetic I have to watch that as well since I have high blood pressure as well. I do not eat everytime I am hungry as I limit it to only three meals a day and if I did eat everytime I was hungry I would be eating round the clock since I will eat and 1/2 hour later I am hungry again. Thank you for the response and have a great day!!
