I have read that eating a broth based (not creamy) soup before a meal actually causes the person to consume LESS calories overall. The hot soup is satisfying and filling, so whatever follows is more satisfying with a smaller portion.

I've never heard that it increases your appetite. I know that it doesn't fill you up for long, though, unless it's a rich and creamy soup.

yes you are right that soups help us increase our appetite. thats why we always have soups before the main course. what i have heard is that the saltyness and the sourness helps increase our appetite.you will not find any starter course or hors deouvre sweet. they are always salty.infact sweet things decreases our appetite hence we have desserts like souffle or ice cream after having the main course.

I think it's because soup is watery and can pass through our digestive system a lot faster. The feeling of being hungry is when your stomach shrinks so I guess when you first drink soup, it expands your stomach and then as it goes into your intestines and your stomach starts to shrink, you feel hungry again.
