Why it is colder in the mountains than in the valley?

Why it is colder in the mountains than in the valley? The mountains are closer to the sun.

The air is thinner where the mountian region is. The valley actually gains more sunlight due to less vegatation and more air circulation where as, the mountians block valley breezes and the vegatation block sunlight.
