Undercover agents from the Humane Society discover "biggest cockfighing ring they have ever seen." Agents were sent after seeing an advertisement in Gamecock magazine. Agents describe the site as having stadium seating with capacity to seat hundreds. They found several rings within the building. Agents discovered that cockfights occur at the site every weekend. The national activist group wants to know why arrests have not been made. The local sheriff has stated, "I am aware of the situation at the club, but do not have enough help to enforce the law." Cockfighting is against the law in Kentucky and it is also against the law to be a spectator at a cockfight. Both are misdemeanor crimes. For those who do not know what cockfighting is, it is a bloodsport between two roosters. You can read about it at Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cockfight . Betting on the roosters occurs with large amounts of money exchanging hands.
What do you think should be done?

I saw a segment on cockfighting on 20/20 or one of those other magazine type shows recently. They went into the arenas (jam-packed to the rafters I might add) with hidden cameras and showed the activities going on. They also commented on the fact that it was common knowledge in the towns where the events took place that this was happening and the cops there just turned a blind eye to it.
I really think there have to be harsher penalties for everyone involved (including police officers who know what was going on but not enforcing the law)

I recently moved from Kentucky and I found when I lived there a lot of animal cruelty type things happened all the time. May I ask what part of Kentucky this was in? I worked at the Warren County Regional Jail and I was amazed that more people weren't coming in with animal cruelty charges when I would see it happening right in my own area. I tried notifying certain people when I knew certain things were going on and basically they said they would take care of it and nothing would happen.

I live in western NY state, and we have a large Hispanic community in our city. Cockfights are known to be occurring in a certain area of the city; in fact some of my patients who are Hispanic have spoken of going to the fights and making money. I don't know where they are held or if the setup is as elaborate as the one you describe, but I'm sure that it is in a clandestine location since it is illegal. I agree, this is cruelty to animals, illegal, and barbaric. These people should be brought up on charges and prosecuted for the misdemeanor offenses.

Oh my, I was not aware that so much of this was still going on. It boggles my mind that people would actually wish to watch animals fight and harm each other :( I don't know what should be done per se, but I'm really glad that the rings were discovered so that they can hopefully all be closed down as quickly and efficently as possible. It really saddens me sometimes, what humans will do for money. It's just not right that we make animals suffer for our enjoyment. I would never want to watch a cockfight :(

Yes, I too thought that this archaic practice was gone. But apparently it isn't. As if this part of the country wasn't already trying hard to crawl out from under a very negative stereotype...

I can't say that I care much for roosters, but I care even less for those who participate in such a cruel passtime.
All my life there has been a rooster that hated me. If I had to describe my worst nightmare it would be a room full of roosters. They are mean. I have never met one that I liked and vice versa. They don't just peck at you they try and get in your face. I don't like them. But Cudos to the Humane Society for breaking up the ring. The unfortunate thing is the Humane Society does not get the support it deserves.
