Thinking about getting a pit bull, but of course I'm a little apprehensive due to all the crazy stories I've heard. Any suggestions from anyone who has had a pit bull on what I should know before getting one?

Pit Bulls are awesome dogs. It's great that you are thinking about getting one. :) I have 3 pure ones & 1 that is 1/2 Lab. The biggest thing to look for is the breeding. If the parents are over 55lbs(female) & 65lbs(male), it's not a pure American Pit Bull Terrier & you should look elsewhere. Also, the short ones that are REALLY broad & fat looking are not pure either (even if they do have papers). Other things to look for are the temperaments of the parents. They are supposed to be extremely human friendly dogs. I also recomend obedience training...more for the image of the breed than anything else. Also, socialization is VERY important...especially with other animals as they can be agressive towards other animals if not socialized properly. Other than that, have fun looking for a pup! :) If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me.

If they're Mexican, then they're not the American Pit Bull Terrier. Just because they have papers does not mean they're pure. There are a lot of people that trick the registries. Also, there are a lot of registries that will register anything.

hmm i think u are wrong... the short ones... why u say that are not pures... theres 2 types of pitbull... American the one u mention and the Mexican the others "the short ones that are REALLY broad & fat looking"... if they have papers they are Pure... i have an american female, and Mexican Male...

OBEDIENCE TRAINING. Any dog can be a good dog if they are well trained. YOU need to learn how to be a good trainer. And you need to be consistent. Also, because these dogs have a bad reputation, YOU need to make sure you follow ALL leash laws in your community. Recognize that not all people like dogs, and some people are afraid of dogs, so always leash your dog. That's just my 2 cents.

I agree about the obedience training. I didn't have it for my dog because we lived way out in the country, and she never went anywhere without us. I trained her myself and she was very obedient. But if we had lived in the city, I certainly would have considered formal training.

Have u ever watched the Dog Whisperer?? if not...watch it. Cesar Milan knows whats up. i would definately have the puppy go to obidience school. you also need to socialize them very well. if they are used to being around many different animals and humans, i think they are less likely to snap. just dont leave the puppy on a chain. oh and they chew EVERYTHING. keep them busy. if possible a 30min walk everyday. we keep a stock of hard white bones for our 2 pits so they dont chew everything...they are like beavers! they might take a lot of work but it is worth everything minute. oh and ours fart ALL the time. its gets pretty nasty if u are in the car and its too cold to roll the window down..haha.

If you want a good pet, the most important thing is the breeder. Don't buy from someone who breeds dogs to fight. And it's a good idea to get a female since they're less likely to get into fights than males are. Lots of love and good care, and you'll have a fine pet. My pit bull was the sweetest thing, and I never had any problems with her. But you will need to keep your dog under your control at all times, because there's a lot of prejudice against them. When I lived in the south, lots of people had them for pets, and I never saw a vicious one.

I didn't have a pitt bull as such but i did have a bull terrior - she was a DARLING! All i can say is, treat them like a member of the family, obedience training is the key & just give them loads of love, they'll grow up to be loving, gentle & loyal!

like all say "obedience training"... and other thing try to get "American" pitbull not a Mexican... mexican are used for fights... americans are docile depending on how u taught them... i have 2 an american and a mexican... if its ur first dog of any breed... get an american... if u think u can handle a mexican... get that... but u just start with an american...

You have to raise them with a lot of love and kindness so that they dont turn on people.and dont give them any table food or raw meat the raw meat is the mine thing (never)! but love them and they will have good temperments.

If you ohave not worked with strong, strong willed before and do not know about training dogs and are apprehensive about getting a it bull, why would you want one. People who do not know how to train or handle dogs like pit bulls are the reason they get out of control and attack. My dogs, 2 males are the most easy going dogs in the world. Yet the organization that breeds them would only give me a male for my first dog because I had experience with Dobermans before that. Maybe you should consider a different dog.
