where the word "valentine" come from?

valentine's day is coming,but i am wondering where the word "valentine" come from.do you know?

This is how I think the story goes: Valentine is named after a Roman soldier named Vanentinius. He made friends with a deaf girl in one of the territories. He taught her to read, and eventually converted her to the forbidden religion of Christianity. After some sort of trial, he was executed, and later canonized by the Church. Later he was made the patron saint of lovers, Saint Valentine, because by this time Venus had lost her job in that capacity. Also because this young girl whome he taught fell in love with him. This is the basics of the story. I'm sure that there are more details worth researching, but I haven't the time right now. Good question though.
