Do you feel fake at work?

I work in the restaurant business, and even if I'm having a really bad day, I have to smile at all the customers and act all cheery, when inside, I'm really not. It is very hard for me to do this because I feel as if I'm being fake. I know that it is what I'm supposed to do, but it almost feels...wrong. Does anyone else feel this way? And if so, how do you deal with it?

Being cheerful is part of your job, even when you don't feel like it. If you are supposed to refill a coffee cup but don't feel like it, you fill it anyway. It is part of the job. There is nothing fake or wrong about that. Sometimes, if we act as though we are cheerful, even when we aren't, we realize that we are more cheerful than we thought we were. In the same way, marriage counselors have advised clients who say they no longer love their mates to act as if they do. Many later report that they are amazed at how feelings often follow actions. Don't feel that you are being hypocrital when you smile at a customer on a day when you feel grouchy inside. Just tell yourself, "Smiling is part of my job. That's what I get paid for." Then go out there and smile.

For me I work in an office, at a lower level though, but I enjoy my job there as well. So, I do not fake at work. Anyway, I've to pretend happy when someone unwanted arrives in my house. But that is a part of the game and secret of happiness is compromise. So, I think, you better get accustomed to this situation. And after all, laughing is good for health as well. So why not laugh more when you are getting the scope?
