Do psychologists really help?

Yes they can help, but a lot of it depends on how good the psychologist or therapist is and how compatible they are with their client. Not all therapist/client relationships work and the person seeking therapy may have to shop around a bit.
There are certainly bad psychologists out there, and if they are only critisizing their client then that isn't helpful at all.

i have heard friends of mine question their authenticity, that all they can do is define a problem, i think it just gave me a crisis of confidence, blessed be

Yes, they do actually help and they are just trying to find the reason for your issues so that they can help you better. Without knowing things about you, it is difficult for them to be able to help you so that is why they ask you all sorts of questions, even if they seem silly to you or someone else. The one that I used to see, was very helpful and am now back to my happy and old self again.

A psychologist is usually gone to when regular medication of a stronger nature is required. They have a degree in psychology and medicine which allows them to prescribe the best possible medication for an individuals particular illlness.
