Why is a private detective called a “private eye”?

because you "privately" hire them to be your "eyes" in any Surveillance situation.

The "eye" part stands for the "i" in the word investigator. They are called Private Investigators as well as Private Detectives.

Because when you become a detective you get an extra eye that goes right into your forehead, you didn't know this?! Tsk, tsk.
