Discourage the Jack Russel from taking liberties, because in the long run these nips can grow into gnawing and finally biting also. Just, tell him that you are annoyed and stare at him directly and say bad boy and express your displeasure. Dog's are very smart they will soon learn what is that you want from them and accordingly modify their behavior.

With any new pup, or other peoples dogs who aren't trained in the niceties of playing .. I always just say a firm NO .. and hold the flat of my hand up as the visual command for NO as well as speaking NO .. Works really well I find ..

There are really sweet little dogs but I think nipping is just in their nature. So is piddling when they get excited. My neighbor has a jack russel and much as I love him, I have to stand back and sort of reach in to pet him without getting a spray.LOL

Jack Russels are playful dogs by nature. I have a miniature pinscher, and they are both playful breeds. What I did with my pup was to take binacca (it's breath spary) and when he'd bite me hard while we were playing, I would lift up his lip and put a little squirt in his mouth. After 3 times, he no longer bit me. He is extreamly sweet, and now I can allow him to gently nip at me while we are playing, and it never gets out of hand. Don't get it in his eyes or mouth though! When you squirt him, give him a command so that he understands that when you says this word, he'd better stop what he's doing. Good luck!

When our dogs were young and would get excited and nip at us during play, we would say a firm NO and stop playing with them that minute. This way the dogs learned if they want to play they can't nip or bite people.

Scream at him or lightly smack hi so that he knows that it is not alright to nip. Or you could try yelping and moving away so that she realises that you are being hurt. My dog seems to be very careful where this is concerned, she will even lift her foot or place it lightly, without putting any weight on us if she steps on us. Generally dogs are aware that they might hurt you, you just need to push them along a bit.
