What is the best way to explain death to a child?

A lot of people are dying in our neighborhood due to old age. How can I explain death to my child?

When my father passed away I just set my sons down and told it to them straight, my oldset sons was able to handle but my other son was much younger and didn't quite understand it that much, but they were both able to eventually get over it.

We have told our child that their grandpa have gone to GOD and hence (As per Indian cusotm) we garland his photograph.

That's a nice explanation. What was you child's reaction? By the way, what is the meaning of garland?
