I have a one yearold and one on the way. we are buying a house with a huge back yard thats fenced in so we want to get a dog. I grew up in china and they only have cats so i never really had a dog for a pet so i dont know alot about the different breeds. I want a dog that will not bite or be too rough with the children and one that will be submisive to their crazy ways. and will be protective As well

A dog, rather than a puppy, is the first step. The individual dog's temperment is more important than the breed. Go to your local shelter or rescue league and they will be able to show you a lot of dogs that are good with children. Bring your child with you and see how they interact. I would suggest that you wait until the baby that you are pregnant with is born and at least toddler age before getting a new dog. Even a dog rather than a puppy is going to need some adjustment to the new home and it will be work. If you decide to get a dog now rather than waiting be sure to ask the shelter/recue league about each dog's experience with newborns. Newborns can be quite scary and strange to dogs and if the dog has had a bad experience with a newborn that is something that you should keep in mind. You'll need to teach your children how to behave with the dog. Even the most well behaved and calm dog will only put up with just so much before they protect themselves. Dogs should not be hit. Their fur, tails, ears, etc. should not be pulled. They should not be sat on or be attempted to be "ridden". These are things that the children will need to be taught.

thanks for the advice. i kind of thought i should get a dog instead of a puppy. but wasnt sure. thanks for the conformation. i will ask the kennel about the ages. my son is pretty gentle with dogs just not cats thats why i cannot get a cat. He is too rough with them. i am teaching him to pet nicely using his stuffed animals and an occasional trip to the kennel. I will not allow any rough treatiment to animals so im trying. but i know some dogs will snap the second a kid is a little rough and others will walk away or bark to let me know.

yes, get a dog from a shelter if you can, just to save ones life. but you should get a puppy so they and your kid can grow up together.

The dogs i grew up with were Sheltie/Corgi mix, he was very loving and loved the female people, because they gave him most attention and love, and he loved all kids because of attention. also have a Border Collie, they are very loving dogs who are very good gaurd dogs and protective. then there are labs, but they will probably be best for when your kid gets older because they are hyper and very bouncy. wait till the kid gets bigger in size. but these dogs are best out in the country with loads of space. but they are really good dogs.

Even though the other posters are totally right- any breed of dog can be good with children, depending on the dog's personality- some breeds are generally better with children as a whole. Labrador retrievers and Golden retrievers tend to be very child friendly. I had a Lab and he was very patient and tolerated a lot of child antics. My current dog now (german shepard/greyhound mix) has such a lovely temperament, but isn't particularly good with children- she likes to go right up to their faces and she barks more when being poked.
