Should the Daily Show be on UK TV?

February 12, 2007 2:49pm CST
I watch the daily show in the UK. It's on daily, obviously, a day behind the US. Very funny. The only concern I have is that we don't get the opposite view, the only exposure we get to Fox news etc... is Jon pointing fun. We, well I, never see them sounding rational. If British opinion of the US administration is all based on the Daily Show, should Americans be pleased or scared?

Well my view is an outside as well but Canadian is as close as you can get to the States. We get the Daily Show on a same day basis and we get Fox news. Frankly, I think Stewart is very even t all of the American news services. When CNN needs taking down a peg, he does it. The same goes for the networks, CNBC or another other news sources. Last week it was Nancy Grace of CNN taking hits. This is why Stewart is such a good choice as a source, he is even-handed. he does care where the ridiculousness comes from, he is going to point it out anyway. He attacks both the administration and the democratic opposition. In may ways he is a lot like Doonesbury, he is not playing favorites. As for Fox "news", there are no news shows that I have seen in my 40 plus years that could equal its bias. While people like to make unsubstantiated accusations about the Times or CNN, Fox's bias is so blatant that no one could argue the point. Consider yourself blessed that you cannot get Fox, O'Reilly and crew.

In agreement with you, Oldiebut. We seem to be on the same wavelength. I too, think Jon Stewart is rather evenhanded with his comments on politions. Noticed some of his political guests run the gamut from left to right and most everything in between. His humor is right on the button in my humble opinion. On the other hand the Daily Show shouldn't be considered a real newscast. However the way Jon skewers the bigwigs of our world is truly a refreshing breath of fresh air in a media sea of gluteous maximus sycophants.

In agreement with you, Oldiebut. I feel we're on pretty much the same wavelength here. I see Mr. Stewart as being pretty even minded. At least in his guests who run the gamut of the political spectrum. You're most certainly correct. He is even handed. rre: Fox news equal its bias. Fair and balanced. Yeah right!!! As fair and balanced as a singing competition between someone's whose tonedeaf* and professional singer. * also known as singing impaired.

I think the answer would be both. Jon Stewart, and most of the cast of the Daily Show, show that not all Americans are idiots who want to blindly follow President Bush wherever he takes us. It shows that the younger Americans (20-30), since we are the ones that have made The Daily Show and The Colbert Report so popular, actually have minds of their own that are different from where our country is going. On the other hand, it does point out how ridiculous our mainstream news programs, like FOX News, really are. Check YouTube for clips or possible the FOX News website.

I think it should be aired everywhere. It is a great show and it shows that we aren't loyal "bushies"!

Personally I don think you should use the Daily Show as your number one source of information regarding politics or news in the U.S. The show is pointing out whats really wrong with the media, politics, and social events. It tries to show the illogical thinking of the events that are happening, to create awarness. It interviews people, so that others who are less informed or who dont care have some kind of information about whats going on. Jon Stewarts his halarious, and I think its one of he best shows on T.V. I dont think that you shoudl be pleased nor scared about the topics on the show...Some people are idiots not just in the U.S but all over the world. Keep watching...

I find that I can't say for certain whether or not America should be pleased or scared. This is because I don't believe its a simple either or response. That being said, I think there are too many different factors involved. First how many British people rely solely on the Daily Show for their opinions of US politics. Hopefully not that many. Not knocking the Daily show. On the other hand, come on now. Its not a real news show. I mean its on Comedy Central in the US. Shouldn't that give one a clue that's Jon Stewart and every other regular on the show are comics? Its true they report real news but if you want straight objective news I'd say watch a bonefide news broadcast. Its true in my humble opinion that Stewarts remarks are right on the button. However to me its not a replacement for real news.
