do you like self-checkouts?

in walmart, they have installed "self-checkouts" recently in my area. this is where you take the items you want to buy and scan them yourself and then pay. i really don't like this. the cashiers are getting paid to do the work and so i think that they should be the ones scanning my items and taking my money. if i go to a "self-checkout", then the cashier is getting paid to stand around while i do the work. what are your views on this?

They are becoming quite popular here in the UK now and most of our Tescos have them, but I don't like them, I like the personal touch of having my items scanned and packed for me, I know this sounds lazy but I like to stick to the traditional way of shopping where you get to talk to a human, not a machine! Also I am always wary when paying money to a machine than a human, sounds daft but I feel more comfortable this way when I shop.

I only use the self-check out lanes if I only have a couple of items. I hate standing in line for 15 minutes when I am only buying one or two things. So I will just zip through the self checkout line.
However, it drives me crazy when people with entire carts full of stuff go through the self-checkout it always causes a traffic jam.

We only have a couple of stores in the area that have them and I wasn't real impressed with them. There usually ends up being a problem checking out and the cashier has to come over and help anyway, so what's the point. It doesn't end up being any faster.

I actually like the self checkouts. It seems to be a much faster way to get in and out of the store. No standing in long lines. I really like to use them.

We haven't a self-checkout here yet, but Walmart has them in a city 85 miles from here.
I, for one, will not be using them, but I know my daughter has. She found it fast and convenient as she only had a few things and there were long line-ups at the other normal checkouts.
One concern I have is that the more self-checkouts there are, there are less jobs available and that is not necesarily a good thing.

In the UK, a lot of the supermarkets now have self checkouts. I think they are a great invention. If you only have a couple of items, you can scan them quickly and avoid the queues at the main checkouts. I always get frustrated with the cashiers who work rally slowly, so it's great for me to do it on my own.

I LOVE self checkouts! I'm able to ring my stuff up much faster than many cashiers and I'm able to bag my own stuff. I like that part the best because I have a certain way I like things bagged. I feel bad asking the cashier to do things a certain way because they are trained to do them one way and then I'm asking them to do it another way - plus they are just trying to get everyone checked out.
