Do you smoke or have to breathe second-hand smoke?

I saw a study on the news tonight that tested 80,000 non-smokers -- 18% of them had damage from second-hand smoke. I smoked for a long time, but my hubby and I both quit when we decided to have a child. We have not smoked now for 14 years. Do you smoke? Do you want to quit? How do you feel your smoke or second-hand smoke affects your health and the health of your children/family.

I do not smoke, but my husband does. It drives me nuts, but I know he is addicted and it's hard to quit. He wants to, but he's just really not motivated yet. I guess. :) We have two small kids and he does smoke around them. He didn't when they were babies, but he does now more. It drives me crazy, but it leads to arguements and fights if I say too much.

Best of luck in helping him to quit. I know I would be hard-pressed to afford a pack of cig's anymore, let alone all the health risks you hear about. Smoking is such a hard habit to break. Maybe you'll be able to find a way to get him to quit. Good luck!

My mother smoked the entire time I was growing up. She still smokes now, and it means that I severaly limit her time with my son (17mths). We used to fight with her about it, as kids, but funny enough, kids never seem to be as important to smokers as their addiction. It's sad

My dad smokes too much but he tells us not to be around him when he smokes. My mom spazzes about him smoking at all because she's mentally ill, even though she smokes her self. Smoking is bad, but there is no need to scream over it, and leave the house. Well, my mom screams at me just because i forgot to wash my hands and i touched the refrigirator door. There's something wrong with her. I don't plan to smoke when i grow up. You really should consider to quit.

Thanks for your comments. I hope life at home gets a bit easier for you -- It's good you do not plan to smoke -- maybe seeing your parents smoke has helped you not light up.

I smoke but I am a respectful smoker. I don't do it around my kids or others; when I am out with friends I never smoke in their cars and when we eat, they always ask me if I want to sit in the smoking section and I decline. I mean, I can go a couple of hours without smoking LOL. I would like to quit but it is hard to do; I have cut down but can't seen to break the habit.

My husband and I both quit about four years ago and we're both grateful for the freedom. I get really annoyed when people who smoke take no consideration for non-smokers. They flaunt their rights and call ex-smokers hypocrites, but what about the rights of people who don't want to breathe in smoke? I grew up in a household of smokers and as much as I love my family, they don't care if you don't smoke. They just blow it right at you, they crowd into the room and all light up at once, and they laugh at you when you're choking. It's sad.

I'm not a smoker. But it's good to know that there are still responsible smokers like you. Passive smokers are very susceptible to lung-related problems with that esp. children. Here in the Philippines, smokers have no care at all. They can smoke anytime, anywhere without being warned (or caught) eventhough we had the law that prohibits it in public places.

Both my husband and I smoke, we have no children and smoking is one of many reasons why we don't have any. We both know the health risks, it is just hard right now for either of us to quit. Fortunately we live in a place where we can go outside to smoke so that we do not have smoke in our house. I do want to quit, but wanting to do it and taking the necessary steps to achieve that goal, well those are two different things right now.

What kind of damage did they have? How much exposuer did they have to second hand smoke? I go to the local casino once a week and it is a smoking casino. It usually isn't to bad becasue the ceilings are tall and it all goes up. Sometimes htough I have someone sit down right next to me and it comes right at me.

I quit 15 years ago but there is someone in the house who does still smoke. She's trying (?) to stop but I worry about the second hand smoke. I'm very sensitive to it. I can tell when I walk into a room if there has been someone in there within the last hour or so smoking. I just can't believe there are still people who smoke (Never thought I'd say that!)

My hubby and I are attempting to go cold trukey, again. If our willpower doesn't hold this time we're going to start taking Chantix. I've heard great things about it, but still we feel like it's more of an accomplishment if we try to do it on our own.

I quit smoking 6 months back hehe and i have experienced that smoking is not very nice. Smoking is kinda dirty when u smoke in a crowded area or when you are with your gang. Right now i am in a gang where no ones smokes and its very nice to be with non smokers. And the best part is that my bf does not smoke its really cool. Every stick reduces our life span so lets try to live longer and have a clean environment

I do not smoke, never have. My father is smoker, I wish he would quit. I am writing because in a way, I have a problem with people who smoke and they really dont care about the other people around them. For example, both of the apartment complexes (my current home and the one before this one) there have been smokers who hang out their windows to have a quick smoke....but their smoke constantly comes into my home. I have informed them several times about this issue. They just seem to not care. I mean, they smoke while hanging out their windows, they obviously do not want the smoke in their houses...so what makes them think I want it in mine. I think second hand smoke is gross. People can do what they want to do, dont get me wrong....its their health. Thats just it though, they affect so many other people when they smoke in public. I think its rude and disrespectful. I understand that some smokers do care and they try not to affect others. However, I am just so tired of it.

My dad smoked and Hubby smoked until he had his first heart attack then my father and hubby and daughter in law all stopped, When they were smoking I could never smell it, Now I just can't stand the smell . I have asthma and the doctor said it was caused by passive smoking xx

I am not a smoker, my husband is though. He smokes either outside or in the garage. I am glad I finally got him to quit smoking in the car. So, while I do not have a lot of second hand smoke, the smell of it on his clothes makes me sick.

That is junk science. It is impossible to separate the effect of breathing city air from the effects of smoking. They tak a goup of peple and ask them if they smoke or lived with smokers, then look at lungs. They DO NOT factor in whether they live in or outside of a city, whether they have worked in manufacturing...and many other factors. The then take the highest number in the groupof those who said they smoked or lived with smokers....and create the final statistics. I am so sick of this.
