I am discovering that I am a bit in the minority in that I have a huge extended family and we all get along very well. I have been married 4 times,( SLOW learner LOL ) and with the exception of Hubby #3, we are all very good friends and spend time together with our Grandkids. We all go to support the kids in Baseball or whatever activity they are involved in. We share Holidays and Birthdays with the boy's and it's fun and we have a mutual respect for one another. My First Husband is my daughters father (Follow along here now...) She was my only child so it's nice to be able to include her dad and his wife whom I adore in the activities. My 2nd Hubby was her step father for 14 yrs, He adores her and the boys as well. Hubby #3 we forget him.... Hubby #4 loves her to death and really gets along well with all the ex'es and the kids. So..... it works very well for us but I understand that it is not that way in all families. What is your situation?

I saw the post that triggered this and was very intrigured... I come from a large family and all of us get along very well. Unfortunately, the "extended" part does not get along AT ALL. My first husband must have been your 3rd, although I have tolerated him at graduations and bootcamp for the sake of the kids. Not looking forward to having to deal with him when weddings start coming up - even though I have boys, it's still not going to be fun dealing with him. My step-children are also a hard spot for us, they want nothing to do with us, unless it involves giving them money or something like that. Needless to say we don't see or talk to them much. I do wish that we could get along, but I think my olive branch is now broken.

awww Reiny- maybe not broken only bruised??? Maybe time can heal. Once everyone is healed and happy in the place where they are in life then maybe those things will be possible for you. I wish you joy and good luck in that endeavor.

Thanks, we are waiting it out. We hope that even though they think they are adults, once they actually have the ability to mature they will realize we are not the enemy.

I come from a reasonably large family, though I have been married only once. When I am upset with my husband I refer to him as my first husband, and he gets the message. Anyway, I have 5 brothers and 3 sisters, while my husband has 2 sisters. I get along fairly well with my siblings, although I often feel as though I was adopted because we differ in so many ways. I know that is not the case as I have a strong resemblance to both of my parents. In any event, my parents would have been crazy to adopt a baby when they had a set of twins that were 2 years and 3 months old and another that was eleven months younger than them when I was born. So basically she had 4 of us with the oldest being 2. My parents were not well off and after I left home THEY would phone ME for money. I guess my younger brothers and sisters felt that I was the family cash cow, because if they were short of funds and needed something, they called me, until I finally put a stop to it. Otherwise, we get along fairly well, but we aren't particularly close. I am closer to my husband's sisters than to my own. Part of the reason for that is we all live in the same city, whereas my family is spread out across the country.

Oh my gosh!! 4 kids under the age of 2, I cannot even fathom that. I am very surprised you all didn't kill each other LOL. Good for you for putting a stop to them taking advantage of you! and shame on them for even thinking that was a bottomless source! I am very close to my half sister but she lives in CO. and I am in San Diego. We talk almost everyday and try to see each other at least once a year.

Awww I am sorry to hear that. Maybe at some point you will want that to change and you can. But if your truly happy in that situation then that your choice.

my husband and I came from a big clan. for my side we usually have a gathering almost everymonth, for it was agreed by the first generation together with the second generation( where I belong) that those in 3rd generation must also establish bonding and sense of belongingness. Its nice to have a huge relatives. one nicest thing I really appreciate with my clan is that every time someone is in the hospital almost a representative in a family will come and visit, one concrete example is when my mother is dying the entire ICU and the adjacent room was filled with our relatives and its a very heartwarming feeling to see how they care about us. With my husband side it was an annual event to have reunion with the entire clan its a one day affair that my kids are waiting for on summer coz they like also the bonding there and we live 300 miles away from them. with extended families that are near to us, yes we do get along for in my in laws side, sunday evening is our family day we will just bring whatever food we cooked for our family then share it to all, potlock... sometimes there are problems but all are being resolve on a nice talk

I come from large families as does my husband. My Dad has 15 brothers and sisters, my Mom has 11 brothers and sisters and their are 6 of us kids. We are all very close. I had no idea that familes fought like some of them do till I saw those talk shows. LOL That is why I dont watch those shows. I think it is silly for families to fight. I know that if I ever need anything at all taht all I have to do is call any of my brothers and they would drop whatever they were doing to help me. That is what families are for.

your right! That is a prime example of what a family should be. Your very lucky to have such a large family and all of you get along and are close. There aren't many families that can say that.\ Good for you!

I've been married to the same man for 26 years. We raised 5 sons together.I guess out "extended" family would include those in our family such as aunts, uncle, cousins. Both our parents did not divorce either. Not as colorful as your extended family, but it will have to suffice.
