Portugal to legalize abortions

The day before yesterday (February 11th 2007) more than 50% from the 43% voters turnout in Portugal voted in favour of legalizing abortion. The country has always been labeled as a very conservative Catholic country and up-to-date abortion is illegal and women could go to jail because of it. Since less than 55% of the electorate voted the results are non-binding, thus leaving it for the Parliament to pass it into law or not. It is most likely it will pass since the Prime Minister is in favour himself and his majority party. What are your thoughts on this?

i suppose before supporting an abortion or going in for that one must have a feeling in oneself as to what is abortion .religion ofcourse does not favour it.but even leaving aside the religion as it is considered these days to be ones private affair, medical studies make it clear foetus is living person and in many of the laws has rights like that of the property.so is it because while killing a foetus wo dont hear the screams inside we have a right to kill.mind it stretched to whatever extent it has to be admitted killing a foetus is killing a person and it is nothing short of a murder.if killing of a foetus is to be justified because it cannot rise to prosecute its killer then anyone killing in concealment a person will have to be justified.that a number of people have voted in its favor is because love of flesh has exceeded the bounds where it fails to care for somebody's life.it has equally exposed the havoc the democratic system plays.majority voted against the socrates and today we remember him as a great scholar.
