What made the hippies turn into warmongers?

Sometimes I feel very confused by what's going on in the world. I understand how the government puts out these commercials -- er, I mean, press conferences where people get all worked up and afraid and start thinking that we need to blow up small villages which are a grave threat to the most powerful nation in the world. Fear does that to people. But the real disconnect, for me, comes when I realize that the ones banging the war drums the loudest are the baby boomers. The generation of peace, love, and good vibes. The ones who marched in the streets to end our involvement in Vietnam. The pot-smoking pacifists. How did this happen. Is it really all just about fear?
