What is the cause of hiccups?

everyone gets hiccups. when the diaphragm contacts involuntarily they cause your vocal cords to close very briefly which produces hiccups. you can hold down your breath for a while to get relief from it.

Hi, hiccups are not caused by a some food they are the result of sudden movement of diaphram, you said you were hungry that means you must have eaten the food really fast, that made your diaphram to move suddenly which caused the hiccups to you... to get ride of them try drinking water, hold your breath or eat sugar and try to eat slowly ....

You diaphragm, the muscle under your lungs that aids in breathing has involuntary spasms sometimes and when this closes your glottis closes causing that hiccup noise.
