What is a graphics card or graphic accelerator and which is the best brand?

I have some games which is not running on my system. My friends told me that happens when you don't have a graphic accelerator. I have intel chipset (inbuilt) but they say it is not enough.Please give me advice.

BEtter look for graphics cards from ati,Look for one with support for both OPENGL & Directx this was all the games supporting these two will work.this way u'll be able to run almost all the games out there
