Rainbow people

I attended a World Rainbow Gathering in Costa Rica two years ago. People from all walks of life travel to a chosen local and live together in harmony. They share whatever trait they have with others, cook and contribute a bit of money to feed everyone. It is a very natural and loving hippy lifestyle. I found though, that more rather than less of the people that attended were just lazy drifters looking for a free meal. People like this give backpackers a bad name, or do they already have a bad name? How many of you have had a backpacker on your couch for way to long or have been that backpacker?

These days I am an independent traveler but in the past I was a backpacker. I stayed in dorms in youth hostels and backpacker hostels. I did self catering in the hostel kitchen. I shopped at supermarkets plus local fruit and vegetable markets. I traveled on trains, buses and ferries with the local people. Nowadays I travel with my three year old disabled son and baby daughter. We stay in cheap guest houses and unusual accommodation on our travels. For me backpacking is a way to travel the world for a low cost. I haven't ever done couch surfing though or been to a rainbow gathering.
