Sour Dough Bread Starter Question- NO bread machine.

I have a recipe for a sour dough bread using whole wheat flour but doesn't include yeast. The idea is that the starter will catch the yeast from the air. You basically use 3 cups of the w.w. flour to 2 cups water, stir, let it sit for a bunch of days and let it get bubbly to let you know it has yeast in it. Anyway I followed all the directions to the tee, but it didn't rise. So I am assuming that my house doesn't have enough yeast in it to make the dough rise? Sould I just use packaged yeast? Does anyone else have any good sour dough bread recipies using yeast? Any suggestions would be great! I do have a bread machine but its packed away and I want to be able to make it by hand. Thank you!! Allison
