Christmas in July

I was so shocked a couple of years ago while driving to work. It was mid year in Australia in a large rural town. There was an advertisment on the radio about gift giving for Christmas in July.
In Australia we love a traditional Christmas...roast turkey, baked ham, all the trimmings and plum pudding with brandy custard. And the rest. But it is so flaming hot over here that it really does seem a bit ridiculous. Some have taken to seafood...masses of prawns and lobster and salads and fruits and of course pavlova, some have chosen to dine away from home at a restaraunt. But surveys have shown that people are loathe to let go of the old traditions and there is a swing back to the old fashioned family gathering and the traditional turkey roast.
IOn order to get maximum enjoyment from this Christmas fare some have decided to have a Christmas in july feast when it is much cooler and the sumptuous feast can be more easily enjoyed. But now stores are jumping on the bandwagon and trying to push commercialism onto us at this time as well. So many families overburden themselves with needless giftgiving at Christmas getting themselves into financial difficulties...now there is a push to create these same problems midway through the year as well. People who shouldn't even have a credit card will max them out again. Kids will be given more and more and more of junk they don't need. The whole thing is just crazy and people's spending is getting out of hand. I guess there is just no way to stop progress and change. It just saddens me.

I really think all of the hollidays are getting way to much, christmas use to be fun when I was a little girl and I usually got one big gift from santa and a small one from my parents ,then , then church ,then all my aunts and uncles and cousins got together for a big turkey and or ham dinner ,with games and fun, and I raised my two kids with the same values, now the kids think they should have hundreds of dollars spent on then ,I have two step grandson who have a thousand or more spent on them ,they have everything and they are 12 and 10 , and they expect it ..not I do not look forward to christmas or most holidays ....not right any more ...

The stores will always commercialize occasions, I guess. But I'm with you---RESIST the temptation to give in to all the commercialism! Especially since you really don't feel like it's Christmas because of the weather, LOL!
I'd stick with celebrating it the way you have described it--a good feast with family around. That sounds good and yummy! :)

This is crazy, particularly since there are many who are trying to change the tradition totally and change it to "The Holiday" not CHRISTmas. And also how many celebrate but don't believe. Anything for a buck or a gift, it's a sign of things to come.
