How long before your blog became profitable for you?

Many of us have blogs in hope of making a quick buck. I would like to know from those of your out there how long git took you before you started to receive a monthly check from your blog or any other means of online income. What do you think you did that made your blog/site take the next step and earn you money? Also any advice to help other get there blog/site make it to the next step.
