What's your no. 1 reason for buying/reading a book?

Do you buy/read a book because of the author? Or because it is recommended by a friend or a celebrity? Are you a spur-of-the-moment buyer or do you surreptitiously read chapters of a book first before making your decision? Or are you the type to base your choice on reviews? personally, i usually go for books because they were written by my favorite author (and therefore it's highly likely that i will love it) or recommended by another reader whose word i trust. occasionally i look at what the critics say first before making the plunge. what about you guys?

hi trionyxx, This one's a very interesting topic, i could say out of the box topic. Basically, i dont have a standard in buying a book. i seldom buy but most of the time borrow good-to-read books from friends then return it afterwards. But come to think of it, it would be good to read books that are recommended by reliable sources like your true bookworm friends because they recommend out of experience and not for the money.

yes, but it's much better if you find out for yourself what type of books you like most. friends can be a huge influence on your choice of reading materials, but i find that there's a huge difference between reading a book that you really like and struggling to finish one just because you don't want to disappoint or offend a friend

i think it also depends on your friends. if you have similar taste, i think you can rely on their recommendation. i'm glad you brought up this topic

I love books! I used to buy books by impulse, like if the title catches my fancy or if one of my favorite authors releases a new one. Now, because book prices have more than doubled, I think and re-think before I buy one. If I cannot sleep without owning that much-coveted book, then I buy it before regret sets in, hehe.

hi! i guess i'll always be an impulsive buyer when it comes to books. if i'm not familiar with the author, i usually base my decision on how i feel, and i usually make instantaneous decisions too heheh. basically, i liked most of the books i've bought on impulse. it's my one true vice

well always love reading and i buybooks not because of the author but mainly because of the story and how much it can entertain me. i usually read the some part of the book or the short summary at the back just to see what im going to expect with the book. i dont really buy books that was recommended by a friend for me i like when im the one who really see the beauty of the book.

I think the biggest turn on for me is if the title pulls me in. I have looked at and sometimes read books just from the title. A good title rocks for me. Once I try the book out I will see if I want to read it, buy it or get rid of it completly. So the number one reason is defently the title. Its gotta be fun and pull me in!

wow, you must decide real fast then. i wonder if you have ever regretted buying one -- you know, a case of promising much more than it actually delivered. just wondering

I tend to stick to authors I am familiar with. I have found that is not necessarily a good thing. One of the libraries in our area has a Writer in Residence every year where you can submit writing to be critiqued by that author as well as attend seminars. When I did this last year I decided I should read this author's book before I meet him. I enjoyed the book and realized that I should not block myself in with particular authors. There are authors out there worth reading and exploring.

I usually read books by my favorite authors. That way there is a very good chance that I will enjoy the book. Once in a while I'll read a book that someone has recommended, but more often than not I will not enjoy the book. Different people have different likes and dislikes. There is nothing worse than trying to suffer through a book that doesn't hold your interest.

The main reason for reading a book is interesting subject no matter who is the author. I love to read spiritual, militry, known/unknown facts & Tips and tricks.

Normally, I buy books based on the synopsis found at the back, or if it's recommended by a trusted friend and I hear about it constantly in different publications. I'm more influenced by the former two factors though rather than reviews which I don't really allow myself to be influenced into that often. Most probably because if there's too much hype surrounding certain books, I tend to get disappointed most of the time. Sometimes I do give in though, if the plot interests me or if it's an esteemed author.

The way that I usually find a book that I want is going to a borders or barnes and nobles and sitting with the first part of the book and seeing if I like the writing style. I am usually looking for a specific type of story and I will spend time looking for the one that I really want. I find that this is the best way for me to find new authors that I might like to read in the future. I don't often just go for best sellers or critcs reviews, but I will often pick up the books of my favorite author only because I am almost guaranteed to get what I want, and I also take recommendations from friends.

We have the same reasons for buying a book! But when I finished all the books of my favorite authors, the tradegy starts! I can stay an hour or two in a bookshop confused over a hundred other books and still havent found which one is worth to try.

i know, i remember feeling sad when i couldn't find any other title(s) (those written by y favorite authors) that i was sure i would like. my batting average for trying other authors has been largely a hit-or-miss affair, so i guess i've been more choosy lately

I always get the same authors. I don't think of it as in a rut, I just find my favorits tried and true. But I am open to new ones

Most of the time because of the author but it depends on the story itself. Usually i read the review before i buy one.I prefer books within my interest ,horror or thriller or fantasy and motivational/self-help books.

I buy and read a book if I like the author and have read books by him/her before. I also buy books that are highly recommended and have good book reviews.

if u are a teenager...maybe u don't have.."reasons" to read books :)) but when u get older u see what mistake u made and try to fix it by reading more and more but i think is too late. i think to read 2-3 pages a day is very good...and those without a reason ;)

My no.1 reason for buying/reading a book is my frame of mind. Even if a book is recommended by a friend, my frame of mind always dictates.
