When rating a response to you discussions do you stop to think about whether the reply you were given contributes to mylot of just base it on the responder's personal opinion? I know as per the guidelines this is not supposed to happen but there is no way to tell. you never find out how people rate your discussions or responses

I would rather base it on the responders personal opinion. There are no guidelines - it is just that I like to make a judgement on the kind of response and the opinion offered.

Would you still give a negative rating to someone whose opinion differs from your own? I think that is kinda wrong. The reason for the rating system is for ratings people's contributions, not on whether or not they agree with you. The only way I give a negative rating is if someone replies with a one liner.

Thank you Cinder. Your response was exactly what I have been trying to get across to people. I have seen some of my friend's ratings drop and I have no idea why. Espically when their responses are GREAT! Even if we don't have the same opinion I have the respect to base my rating of their response on their contribution to the discussion at hand. Again thank you.

I think it's shocking to even think about giving someone a negative just because your opinion is different. There is NO ONE here that has the right to say that someones opinion is wrong. I'm sure people do it - but i'm sure karma will come to get them. I only give negatives to people who write responses like "i agree" or "yes" and the ones that are a comment in 5 words or less ... oh and people who don't even read the question but just comment on something totally irrelevant or leave a link for some other site in hope that i'll sign up using their referral link - ugh!

It is quite frustrating. But there will always be those who think their opinion is always right and anyone who thinks different they will put down in whatever way they can. Here on mylot they give negative ratings. And I agree NO ONE, has the right to tell someone their opinion is wrong.

I have yet to use the negative button. When I rate a post or a response to one of my posts I think about if it actually applies to my conversation, even if they disagree with what I say I still give + because they contributed to the converstation. The people who respond with one liners I usually just don't rate at all.
