Is it the era of acquisitions?

The acquiring of Hutch by vodafone, corus by TataSteel and many more such acquisitions have clearly indicated that the trend today is of acquistions. Do you think this would be a healthy trend? Is this the order of the day?

If I was a traditional business-type I would focus on hiring very smart and far-sighted thinkers as opposed to buying other companies.
In the modern technological age we live in today, the greatest businesses in the world can become obsolete and worthless overnight. Multi-million dollar companies will be toppled by young men & women creating revolutionary pieces of software & programs in their spare time.
This is probably more true, of course for a technological company. I would probably be in aquisition mode, however, if I was in the real estate or loan business.
