I'm currently studying a module regarding Social Work. A thought-provoking question came to me one day. As a social worker, it is our responsibility to try to have a win-win situation everytime we handle a problem( although that s always never the case) hence we must do what's right in that moment of the situation to salvage whatever hope there is left and sometimes, it is against out moral principles. Matters such as abortion(unwanted pregnancy, too poor to afford) can be a very touchy issue. Hence shloud preach what we have been taught in class and books or should we help based on our own judgement? I want to know as many people views as possible. My lecturer also could not gave me a definite answer for this. thanks guys

I was in foster care and have been throughthe system and am still involved in it through other ways. And I once asked a friend of mine how she can sleep at night (shes a social worker), and she said by notgetting emotionally involved. I think you almost need to have two heads....your head, then your social worker head. And what one says isn't necessarily be the same as the other. I think in situations like abortian etc, you need to stand back from your own beliefs and think proffesionally. It might not be what you really want to say. Think about all those children that are returned every day to there families, but although the social worker knows it shouldn't happen has got no evidence to base that decision on. Its a very hard position to stand. And the only way it will become clear is through experience in the field. Good luck!

You gave me some food for thought. i guess a social worker gotta be emotionally very strong too and because the job can be mentally draining.maybe that's why there is shortage of manpower in the social work service.

I don't think books can tell you an answer that will fit every situation. You have to find out all the facts of the situation and then make the decision based on these. You need to use the books to teach you what the right judgements should usually be, but you need to make sure it is right for the situation you ar in.

i think to know when to draw the lines between following the books and using our own judegments lies on experiences. i guess i got a long way to go...
