My mother is not allowing to have PETS I like them a lot?

My friend has two little Pamalion Puppies. And whenever I go to his house, I always play with them its a lot of fun for me. But i have to place a stone on my heart to not to let have Pets because my mother is strictly against it. She says that if you get the pet then you always stay around with them and waste your precious span of time. Its the time to build your career. She say that even you get a PET, it needs a lot of care and time to time check up And with your busy college and coaching schedules you won't be giving the time and all the things have to be done by me. Which I can't. But I really want to have a pet. So what should I do. Any suggestions.
