Dumb Crazy Laws

February 14, 2007 11:50am CST
I live in the UK and here we have some crazy laws. It is legal to kill a Scot's man in York on a Tuesday This apparantly is perfectly legal and this particular law dates back centuries. It is still the law today as far as I know. With the exceptions of carrots it is illegal to sell most goods on a Sunday. Why carrots? What makes them so special? All English males over the age of 14 are to carry out 2 hours of longbow practise a week supervised by the local clergy This one obviously dates back way back as well but even although it is still the law it doesn't mean every english male who doesn't fulfill this will be charged. But it would be interesting if they were. London taxi cabs must carry a bale of hay and sack of oats. Again this one will not be followed through now a days and it is still the law. I also saw another one which might be considered funny by other nationalities. in order for us to own a television we have to pay a license of around £100 a year (US$200) Do you know of any other funny laws for the United Kingdom or for your own country which are peculiar? Remember that all these laws are still in The Big Book of Laws or wherever the list is.

LOL! Well that gave me a laugh! I guess all this comes from the Doomsday Book, and all the old laws from the Medieval times. Can't think of any ore daft English ones off the tope of my head, but I'm sure there are plenty. Fun discussion. Thanks.

The Doomsday Book was written for William the Conqueror, after he conquered England (didn't fancy the Scots then?). It documented the different places that existed then. It's now kept in the records office in kew, London.

I guess I won't be going to York on a Tuesday then. I had heard about this before, but not most of the other ones. If London taxis carried a bale of hay and a sack of oats how much room would be left for the paying passengers? I only found out yesterday that you can watch internet television programmes in U.K. without a tv licence as long as your computer doesn't have a specific tv tuner. Channel 4 is already available, and other channels should be following soon. If your computer does have a tv tuner (and most modern ones do) then you do need a licence.

Oh so if you don't have TV and you have a computer which you didnt know had a TV tuner then they can jail you. How mental is that?

As mental as giving thugs and muggers £40 instant fines, and jailing little old ladies for not paying council tax. (If your jailed for Council Tax non-payment you cannot get time off for good behaviour). Also suggested that hardened criminals (including some murderers) will only be jailed at weekends (this was suggested recently), as the jails are overcrowded.

If you are in a canadian prison, when you leave they must provide you with a horse, a pistol and bullets so you can ride out of town. Lol.
