My boyfriend and I are just starting out and I'm sure as you all know, just starting out is so expensive! Having said this, I was wondering if any of you have purchased second hand furniture when you just started out or if you bought all new? I went into a second hand store and got a lot of really good deals! I expected to find a lot of junk in this store but there was some furniture in really good shape and I couldn't pass it up. I bought a couch, kitchen table and chairs, a rocking chair, coffee table and a large mirror all for under $500...does that sound like a good deal? Would you be hesitant about buying second hand furniture? Have you ever done it? What was it? Were you satisfied with it in the end?

It is quite sad that there are no stores in my locality which offers second hand furnitures. For me, they are better buys than brand new ones as such always turn out to be quite expensive. Considering how difficult it is to be earning much these days, it will always be best to cut on corners as regards expenses to be able to save for other pressing ones.

I had to look in the paper to find a couch because the second hand stores near my house were an hour away. People also look for stuff at garage sales. If I lived where you do I would open up a shop and make money, because second hand furniture is a good business if you sell quality stuff. You could go to garage sales and offer to take whatever they can't sell.

I never buy second hand furniture. As second hand furniture is not popular in Hong Kong.So most of our time,we buy new furniture.Although it's a bit expensive,I think it's worth it.

When we moved into our first house (a rental) we had a bed and tv, everything else we were given by friends and family or we bought off friends. We were preparing for a baby at the same time, so we were grateful to have anything. Now we have our own house and have given away all of the old furniture and replaced it with furniture we've bought new.

I like to bought something. Altough that second hand. It doesn't matter. Because you can care that things as well. So will nothing happen. The most important thing is you care or not with that things.

I love second hand stores. I am a frugal shopper and buy things second hand and from garage sales a lot. You can get some really good deals. yes, there is a bunch of junk, but you can find some great deals, too. I think getting all of that for under $500 is a good deal as long as it's all great. Sounds like you did great. There is nothing wrong with getting pre-owned things.

The stuff I've got is in great shape..I was surprised. Aside from the design on the couch..it looks brand new! I've bought a slip cover for it because I don't really like the flowery design on it..

yes, me and my hubby do that as well. We have the hospice shop here that is selling some second hand furnitures and i would say that most of the furnitures really are in a very good condition and much better than buying the new one for a good price. I am satisfied with the things that we bought. Beside from that, you know that the money goes into helping the charity as well.

My husband and I have bought used furniture. We bought it of an elderly woman who was moving from a big home to a condo. She sold us our whole living room set for $150 dollars. We love it. Since she was elderly the furniture was in almost mint condition.

Wow! That really WAS a great deal! I just moved, myself and I didn't bring ANY furniture with me. All the furniture I have now is secondhand. The bed was already here. Along with a couple side tables, couple lamps, coffee table, wicker table thingy, and a bean bag chair/footrest thing... whatever it is. LOL My friend ended up buying a better computer chair (secondhand) for herself and gave me her old one, so that was here, too. And she also went on Freecycle and Craig's List and got me a couch, big worker's table thingy, and a glider rocker. All for free! When we went to pick them up, a couple of the people gave us a few extra things like a little table and a lamp and a bookcase. The couch is a little dirty, but hey, it's a couch and it was free! I don't really mind if it's secondhand. It was free and I have a place to sit and places to put my things, including my computer. So, it's all good! LOL I just LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the glider rocker!

I don't mind buying second hand stuff. I would not however, buy a used mattress. I think that is a little gross. If you bought all that for under $500. I'd say you got a good deal. I have bought used clothes for my kid's, and used couches, refridgerator, and other odd's and end's. Good luck

That sounds pretty good to me. I have a friend who has had some great deals at the Goodwill stores. Dont know you have them where you live but they have people working for them that who fix anything that might need repairs before you buy it.

I have never had new living room furnature in my life and I have been married for 28 years. Everything we have is used. We did purchase our kitchen table new about 20 years ago. I would never purachase a used mattress but other than that, I would definately buy used. I love thrift stores. I always find good bargains. I have purchased chest of drawers and end tables at yard sales too. I am a frugal person and purchased used is what I do. I always check them out good before I purchase them. I have always been satisified and I feel good saving money.

I started buying second hand when I moved out on my own too! I thought the same thing that you couldn't get anything really nice but You can! I actually just bought a kitchen table with a leaf extention and chairs for $10.00 at a yard sale I love buying frugal. It also recycles old furniture so we are not wasting trees! I would much rather save it than throw it out! I still buy things second hand all the time!

Absolutely nothing wrong with buying second hand furniture. Sounds like you found some great deals? DEFINITELY nothing wrong with saving money? Yes, we've bought seconds hand furniture. One of the items we bought was a couch. It was in great shape and we used it for years. I liked it all the more because we didn't spend a fortune on it. :)

You did indeed get an awesome deal. I have bought a lot of second hand furniture and appliances and I've never had a problem with them. As you've said, it's very expensive when you are first starting out on your own and second hand furniture fits a budget much better. Once you have all the necessities, then you can put money away towards new furniture if you're so inclined.

There's nothing wrong with buying second hand furniture, it's a great idea. to be honest sometimes second hand furniture is far better quality than new, and certainly a great deal cheaper too. I have bought second hand over the years and have no regrets.

All the furniture in my house is second hand. I just can't afford to buy stuff like that new. I'm very happy with all the stuff I have picked up second hand.
