Legal advice in Canada

I had a friend phone me last night asking about Defamation of Character (I am studying to be a Paralegal but not that far into it yet). I was wondering if anyone can give me advice on what he should do. His ex-girlfriend is going around telling everyone he is gay when he is married with a child. The breaking point for him is when a co-worker came up to him and informed him of this rumor going on while they were at work. I told him to talk to a lawyer. Is there anyway he can do this on his own? Please help as this is upsetting to him and his family.

Would this not be better handled as harrassment and therefore the police can become involved then leaving it up to the courts to decide whether this is an example of defamation of character that can last in the courts for years making money for only the lawyers?
Since the idea is to STOP the action,then this would be much quicker(in my opinion).
