A router is a way for networks to talk to each other. The routers basic function is to send packets on to there destinations. A packet is filed with information and allows computers to communicate over different technologies like ethernet or fiber cables. A good way to think of it is a router is a post office which receives packages and then sends that package to other post offices (routers) until it reaches the post office(router) that can then send the package to the correct destination house(computer). To do this your router looks at different things but the two main componnets the router looks at is the IP address and Mac Address for the Destination computer that is located in every packet that is sent. This is a real basic understanding of the router. If you have any questions don't hasitate to ask.

A router allows more than one computer to share one internet connection. It can also network computers so that they can share information back and forth.

A router is a networking device used when connecting computers to the internet, usually it is used in homes connected to the modem in one end and to the computers in the other end. Any things in particular you want to know, I'm a networking student so I should be able to answer your questions, though I'm a bit short of time right now.
