Disciplining your child...the right way?

Is there any right way to discipline your child...as a child i was spanked...not a great deal of course but when i was unruly my parent were sure to put me i nplace. i think its important for a child to no their authority figures. i do however think there is a fine line that separated discipline and abuse... But when is the right time to spank a child? and where? does it work?
