A user's comment about the Philippines: what can you say about this?

I was wading through the pages to look for a discussion to respond to and I accidentally found this comment. He said that the Philippines is the last country on earth that he will ever visit. Some of the reasons are: he will find it very hard to communicate in English with people in the streets, very high crime rate, economically unstable, the army/military is unstable and he has heard a lot of other instabilities. I am a Filipino living in the Philippines so definitely I was a little offended. There maybe some elements of truth in what he said but that's rather a very poor picture of what the Philippines is. I have travelled to 16 different countries all over the world, from Asia to Europe and I can say that there are many things in other countries that are a lot better than what we have here but I still love it here. That's the reason why I am here. We may have some share of crimes and instability but who doesn't. I love the Philippines.

If I am next to that person who commented the Philippines that way, I could have given him a painful shot.. Why? Philippines has the highest literacy rate among Asian countries. Philippines has places included in the eight wonders of the world. The reigning world boxing champion is Filipino. The Miss International beauty titlist is a Filipino. There is only one Asian and thats a Filipino who made it to the Broadway Musical.

I love the Philippines too.^^ He probably does not know enough of the Philippines.. the things he have pointed out, as you yourself had said, can be found anywhere else too. His responses may be borne out of ignorance - people tend to hate what they do not understand, after all. Personally, I would love for him to visit the Philippines. Why? Because we know that though there are those who do not look too highly upon us, we as Filipinos continue to welcome them and happily prove them wrong. We are not an unkind people, who would cheerfully hurt those who hurt us - fact is, we can become too hospitable for our own good. If the Filipinos won't be able to turn his heart around, I doubt anything else will. Ignorance aside, he may have known someone from here to cause him to have such misguided impressions. I had never been out of the country, but the people I have talked to from other countries all expressed desire to visit the Philippines. It's never unusual from me, as most of them who have had experience befriending or talking to Filipinos had fallen in love with the Filipino people. Also, those things that he had pointed out are those churned out by news daily. News = reality, but reality does not equal truth. And as a parting shot, reputation id what others think who you are - character is who you really are. And the character of the Philippines is something to be proud of. \m/^_^

i respect his opinion about the philippines, but in my own opinion philippines is a very beautiful country, with hospitable people and english speaking too. all countries have their own insurgency problems, and we all know that, it is just unfair that he only chose philippines as the last choice he would go. he is missing half of his life.... :)

Like what everyone said here, that person who made the comment simply didnt know what he was talking about. He must have heard of the word Philippines and doesnt even know where it is. Its offending but i do feel sorry for him. I think he is one of those people who is scared to leave his own house for fear of being ridiculed and shot. he should be if he says insane comments.:P

others may consider our country to be third world country but that doesnt mean that they have the right to judge us. every country in this world shares the problem with economic unstability, crime and other negative factors that might affect a country's image but judging it like you've known the country since birth. try to visit us here and see what we can offer you. most of our people has great values and i'm sure you'll enjoy it here

I've got to find out where he lives. I didn't know there was any place that didn't have those issues. And people who won't visit places unless everyone from that country learns to speak the visitor's language are not only ethnocentric, but they're missing out. As for me, I can't wait to visit the Philippines and I hope to live there someday.

I am a filipino as well and sad to say that the person who post a comment like that could likely misjudge our country just like that. Does this person ever visited the Philippines? its really obvious that he/she never visited this country because hes not even aware that Filipinos speak english very well and even those on the streets and those who never went to school knew how to speak english. Our country is consist of 7107 islands, so the situation of one place differs from the other. We may be a third world country but we do have a lot to offer. Our values and traditions are the best thing about being who we are. Anywhere in the world, there are a lot of filipinos who excel in different fields. There maybe a lot of instabilities in this country, but we are still strong and i do believe that we can be better in the next years to come. I am very proud to be a FILIPINO!

well we can't force that NOBODY to go the philippines if he doesn't want to. one thing i disagree with that NOBODY, Filipinos are literate and they can speak in english. this is also the reason why there are many Filipinos here in mylot :) by the way, you're really a traveller, you have visited to 16 different countries already. that's awesome :)

Well, in all honesty, if/when I have a chance to visit Manila (for instance); I would just go with a heart beat. lol I love to travel, and that doesn't stop me, though I read here and there, there is crime in one place where I would want to go. As long as the place is not where people are in war (like in Afganisthan or Iraq), then I would say, yeah I would love to see/ to go. But mind you, probably I would go there as well.. hahaha.. I don't know. Don't take it too much to your heart, manong05. I heard some people also scared to go to Indonesia, because of the bombing (for instance) but still, when I have the chance to go to Indonesia, I will go with a heart beat, too.

i love my country. some of the points raised by that person are true, they also hold true for other countries. i'll scratch this down to his ignorance of what the country really has to offer. if i were him, before i judge what a country is like, he should try living in that country for a few months and see if he hates it.

I think the person has all the right to express such dislike. Although vicariously, the conditions he mentioned are absolutely true except on the ability of people to speak in English, of course, (ask him if he may want/prefer to be in China lol!). Let's just take it as a constructive reflection of the true Philippines and be humble to accept such fact. I want to consider it as a wake-up call for all the people in authority. The Philippines has all its natural beauty besmirched by the lackneyed control of the ruling class, the complacency of the middle class and the ineptitude of the government! Agree?

Well i wouldnt want to visit their country if every people there is like him/her. I am a Filipino and its true that there are crimes here, the military and economy is unstable but hey... there are also golden sunsets here, beautiful beaches, virgin forests, hospitable people, interesting culture, unique species of animals and flowers, spring water, and many other things that i love here. Those negative things he/she said bothers me also but its not enough to make me blind about the positive things. I wish she wouldnt be as judgemental as that. Its offending.

the person who said that is ignorant or let's not be harsh, he might be living in Utopia where everything is perfect pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease! Ofcourse, language is not an issue, in fact many linguists say that Filipinos are sooooooooo good in the language that they may even be better in English than other people who has EFL. Crime rate is everywhere. You can be in the streets of the most rich state and yet crime rate is still present, so, high crime rate is not exclusive in the Philippines. And finally on instability, again, it depends on the definition. We maybe having difficulties, but we can still be stable. So a political or military turmoil may be a crisis, but it does not mean that we are unstable. What is the problem with maleducated people is that they follow the model of Utopia, which by the way never existed. So, the Philippines may have crimes, may not earn that much, but the people are great and we can say without batting an eyelash that we are good english speakers and writers!

Did he say what country he came from? I think that maybe because there are a lot of bad reports about the Philippines. If reported outside the Philippines, it seems that their are crimes and kidnaps everywhere.. I wish they would try to visit us so we can prove them wrong..
