this style of painting originated during the time of Ramayana.when king Janak commisioned artists to do paintings at the time of marriage of his daughter to lord RAM. these paintings are done by the womens of the villages around the present town of madhubani and other areas of Mithila. the painiting was initially done on freshly plastered huts, but now they are also done on cloths, hand made paper and canvas. the color they use are derived from plants. these paintings mostly depict nature and mytological events and the themes generally revolves around hindu dieties like krishna , ram, shiva, durga, lakshmi, saraswati. natural objects like sun ,moon, tulsi are also painted. others include scenees of weddings, royal court rooms. generally no space is left and gaps are usually filled by painting flowers, birds, animals and geometric designs
