How do you find the median number from a frequency table?

The median is the "middle data point". Consider the following frequency table showing data about 114 pupils in a year group. Since there are 114 children, the median is found half way down the table. This comes between the 57th and 58th data point. Number Frequency 1 12 2 23 3 49 4 8 5 5 6 7 7 5 8 5 Total 114 Start at 12 and add on 23 to give 35. You have not reached the half way point yet so continue. 35 + 49 = 84. This is beyond the half way point, hence the median = 3.
