What do you call it? Duct tape or Duck tape? I have no idea why but for some reason when I write it it's "duct" (which is correct) but when I say it the word comes out "duck". Have you seen the new colored duct tape? I have but admit I've never used it - just doesn't seem the same if it's not grey. And why grey - it very rarely matches what it's being applied to, unless on the slight chance it's actually being used on a "duct". It remains an major tool in my house: duct tape, super glue, and a hammer, I can fix most anything. What are your most important household tools?

Yup, our house too! Duct tape is my husband's stand by for fixing almost anything. I personally swear by straight pins, safety pins and the Mr. Clean magic eraser!! Seems I remember a few years back seeing an article on CNN or somewehre that the winner of the duct tape prom dress contest was fighting her school to be able to wear the dress to the prom. There is a website devoted to making things from duct tape called 'Ducttapefashions'..the link is below. There are purses, braclets, backpacks and more! There are numerous sites showing the dresses that have been made! Who would have thought...Boy, I sure wish I had bought stock before it made it so big! website: http://www.ducttapefashion.com/

"and tonight macgyver makes a space ship out off tin cans and duct tape" *laughs* ... i know its duct but i think i always say duck too. I can't say i've seen coloured duct tape in shops over here - but i did see that kid on David Letterman who made all his Christmas presents out of coloured duct tape - like wallets and shoes! I find screwdrivers are really essential - but i can never find one when i need it ... and when i eventually do its either the wrong type or size - grrrr

Duct tape also comes in a variety of new colors like red, blue and green. The best I have seen and tried is called 200 mph tape, it is black in color and compares to duct tape but at least 3 times more sticky, this stuff will fix anything...Actually the name came from it being used on Nascar, it is the same tape they use on the front of the cars to block air and increase downforce, if you ever see this tape called 200 mph tape, grab yourself some. One of my most important tools along with duct tape is hay wire, works great for hanging pictures, tying up loose plumbing, etc... I find that duct tape doesn't work well on actual ducts, I usually use the aluminum tape for this as it takes the heat better.

Now that is interesting, I've honestly never used it on an actual duct. I am going to be looking for some 200 mph tape!

It's Duct tape, because its original use was for air ducts and such. We call it Duck tape, because that's the largest selling brand. It's like they brainwashed us! lol. The same way some call all soda's Coke. or some call all tissues Klenex's. Very weird, eh? Duck tape brand duct tape has a contest every year to make a prom dress and tux out of duct tape, to win a scholarship. The multiple colors could come in handy, here :P lol. My most important household tools are probably duct tape, a screwdriver, and paperclips/safetypins. You'd be amazed what you can fix with that.

It's duct tape not duck tape. They have a bunch of new colors. My most important tool is a screwdriver around the house.

Ahhh, if you can't fix it, duct tape it, lol. We once held an entire set together with duct tape when I was working on our high school musical. The wall was 8 feet by 10 feet and was supposed to fall over at the end of the play. Well the first time we rehearsed it the wall fell like planned but the furniture on the stage was in the way and it broke into 3 pieces. We had about 20 minutes to get it put back together for the next matinee performance, lol. We literally duct taped the whole thing together and it stayed liked that for the next 4 performances. Good times.

I say duct tape as duck sounds funny, ducks can be very noisy (like Donald duck) and a peace of "duck tape" can be fitted on their beak to silence them.. that's the original use and why it was named duck tape. lol I always have duct tape and actually I have plenty of tools to fix anything, I rarely need to hire some help as I'm handy with electricity, plumbing, etc :)

Home Alone - From the movie "Home Alone" staring Macaulay Culkin, Joe Pesci, and Catherine O'Hara. The family leaves on vacation only to realize they have left the youngest child, played by Macaulay Culkin, Home Alone. Burglers are robbing houses in the neighborhood and Macaulay Culkin but protect his family's home.
You are very welcome. I was laughing so hard I was crying, for an hour after reading your response. All I could picture was every time you see a bottle or tube of Super Glue - Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone screaming "Ahhhhhhhh".

I actually know the answer to that word problem...duct tape is the type of tape. "Duck" tape is actually a brand name of duct tape. Either way, I love the stuff.

I love the stuff and no matter what you call it, ( we call it 200 mph tape, as we watch Nascar) it is wonderful stuff. I agree with the first poster. Duct tape is what it is, and Duck tape is a brand name. My most used, most important 'tool' is a knife and scissors. I would say a screwdriver and hammer, but I can never find them, and end up using a knife and my shoe for these. A shoe is actually a good tool. It can be used as a hammer, a fly swatter, a cat/dog startler for when they are about o get in trouble, and lots of other thing also.

Well, i think most people just flow the words together and are saying "duct tape" but it sounds like :duck tape" because of the meshing of words. That is how it is for me, anyhow.

the correct word is duct tape. it's good for taping up ducts with holes in them. some use it to patch up water hoses. some use it to patch up jeans. go figure...
