Nightlights and Children

Does your child/ren sleep with a nightlight? Is it because they're afraid of monsters under the bed, in the closet? Or is it a comfort, do you think, simply to have it there? My son does sleep with a night light, but i think it's more for play for him. He's four, and likes to take a book with him to bed to look at the pictures, although we do keep a nightlight in the bathroom and hallway in case he needs to get up. how about you?

My son sleeps with a night light. He told his father and I if he needs us he needs to see.

I can understand that feeling, and that reason. I'd rather leave nightlights all the way through the house and keep my son comfortable if he needs to get up, than leave it dark and him afraid.

my children have a nightlight not because they are afraid but because they like to look at books and also to draw before they give it up for the night! We also have one in the bathroom because they can not reach the switch and that way they don't have to go into a dark bathroom at night!

I'm a grown woman, and frankly I prefer sleeping with a night light. LOL My two kids both have night lights in their rooms.. those that are automatic and turn on when it's dark. They also fall asleep with the radio on. I think mostly, it's just comforting. But also, my oldest says she's afraid of the dark. We only just put a night light in the bathroom (after putting an outlet in there), since she was turning on the hall light, so she could see her way into the bathroom, which is just across the hall. LOL

I think our nightlight in the bedroom comes from the alarm clock, cd player, and phone display. LOL those are just grownup nightlights, don't you think?

I think for our boys, they need the night light because they are afraid of the dark. I slept with a night light for most of my life so I can't complain! I'm still not fond of getting up at night and trying to find the light switch in the dark so a night light is still a going thing for this adult too!

There's absolutely nothing wrong with that! We leave lights on throughout the house at night. I think maybe it's a human trait to just want to have lights on. Maybe on a deep down level, we're all afraid of the dark!

My kids do have to have a nightlight on. I have a 7, 5, and 3 year old. My oldest doesn't really care for the nightlight, or can sleep without it but the other two HATE not having it on. I'll put them to bed and act like I forgot the nightlight just to see if they forgot or won't say anything, but man do they start to scream if I close the door and don't turn it on. They have to have it on because it looks like they're scared of the dark. Their rooms are right next to ours but they're still scared. I guess it's just kids being kids and scared of the dark like you said, of the monsters in the closets or under the bed, lol.

My son is the same way. If the bulb goes out on it, i'll guarantee we know about it immediately!! I'm glad to know he might grow out of it in a couple of years. His bedroom is next to ours also, but he gets scared because our heater outside makes funky sounds. I think it's partly for the parents also, so we can check on our kids.

No, my son doesn't sleep with a nightlight. He finds it a distraction rather than a comfort thing. If I want to check in on him, I have to turn on the lights outside his room instead.

My kids have a night light also...but the night light is the closet light. When they fall asleep, they know the light gets turned off. At times I think they use it as play also. But that means when they start to play too much, I can use it as a threat that if they do not stop, I get to turn it off. hehehehe

LOL no, our son won't go to sleep without a night light right now. He's just started to talk about monsters, so we make sure he knows none can get to him in his room. it's a Bugg safe zone. LOL bugg being his nickname. I figure sooner or later he'll grow out of it, and if not..well. LOL we'll deal with that when we come to it.

LOL yeah, we don't mention the bed bugs yet. he might really look for them. LOL but he knows in this house any bug inside is squished and smeared. my wife started that with spiders so no bug is safe here!

I can tease my sisters about it. And they are not scared. They also tease me about bed bugs, and I also tease them back. I think that I got it from my mom. I would always tell her good night and not to let the bed bugs bite. Then she would tell me, if they do bite them back!! :) Silly mommy...tell you what though, if I found a bug in my bed I would run to my mommy and tell her. I wouldn't bite it!! :)

I would have never thought that it could be for comfort. My brother use to have a night light, but now he says that he is not scared anymore. But, now and then I have to come and tuck him in and turn off the light. My sisters turn on the closet light when they go to bed though. I think that most of the time it it used to play as well, but it may be for it just to be there. I really don't think that they are scared. Because when they are really tired, they will ask me not to turn it on, or they will not even turn it on!! :)

LOL yeah, he uses it for play, too. I know he does. But i figure a little bit of play before bed isn't a bad thing as he's usually looking at books and making up stories for himself after he's had this bedtime story from me or my wife. But he does get scared if he doesn't have it, especially if he wakes up in the night. we've got one in his room, and one in the bathroom just in case. We've never had a problem with bed wetting, so i guess it works.
