Rude to correct bad English?

I note a lot of posts from English learners which is fine because I understand that some posters use the internet to brush up on their English. However, some replies and questions are so bad, you really can't understand them. I try to work out what the replies mean, but it can be really dificult.
Should we tell the individual that they are not making sense? Should we correct bad English? How can we help to improve someones' use of language? If they are here to learn, is it polite to correct poeple??

I'm not so sure that it is such a great idea for two reasons - firstly you will get all the sticklers out there trying to correct typos and grammar - I used to be on a discussion site like that and it was sooo annoying - secondly do people go back to read your response? Half the time I think not. I'm all for helping people with their English language if they ask for it but if not then I think it may cause offence! Great discussion topic though!

I think you're right. if they don't read the response though, then they're not here to improve their english are they?? Great point though, I always respond, I am the last poster on all my discussions. I certainly don't want to be pedantic, but I just had two replies I honestly didn't understand, I always reply on principle so I had to guess what they meant!!

I must agree though I've had a few posts myself which I couldn't make head nor tail of! I like to respond to everyone who has taken the trouble to add to one of my discussions but find most don't go back to look unless it's my friends! I usually put 'thank you for your response' if I can't understand it - :-)

Most sites have spell checks, that too when you type 'colour' it will have only one colour (RED)- underlined with red colour. You are helped with 'color' only. Like this so many words, you would be preplexed to correct everytime.
Grammerwise also there is lot of confusion between active and passive voices, when you are asking PC to do for you. Business language is different, General letter is different. Here also people do not get much of assistance.
I think as long as the message is clear to the other end, any language will do. However, it is in the interest of individuals to improve their language and sometimes this becomes optional.
When I was in Bihar, one old lady staying close to my house was seen in a market one evening. She was trying to purchase small potatos. Potatos in Hindi are called 'aalu'. She was not having much knowledge in Hindi. At that time, she could not get the correct hindi word for small potatos. She asked the shop owner to give her 'badaa aalu kaa bacchaa do' means 'you give me kids of big potato. She has somehow conveyed the message. The shop owner smilingly asked 'you mean chhotaa aaalu' (small potatos) and give her what she actually aspired.

Thank you - nice story!
I notice that when I use firefox rather than Internet explorer, wrongly spelt words are underlined in red in my MyLot posts (very handy). I think you are right gentle correction is the way to go, as long as it is done humbly and helpfully. You get best answer for the story alone!

Obviously people should write correct english on an english forum. It doesnt make sense to have people speaking other languages or unacceptable english since it detracts from the community. It just clutters the site like spam.

I tend to agree, but I am mindful that there is a balance to be struck between those genuinely interested in brushing up their language skills, and those for whom the mighty dollar is too tempting despite the fact they barely know more than four words of English.

For example, are you aware that your English is hard to read, or are you using what you suppose are shortcuts?
I have seen a lot of posts which use language in the same way that you have here.
Without being rude (I am genuinely interested in your answer) do you think that 'wid' is an accepted short form of 'with'? or that 'wat dey' is OK for 'what they', after all, it only takes one more letter per word to make it easy to understand. Not so much for me, but for the people who's English is not so strong - they may see your post and begin to use the same word structures. Your English is good enough to spell correctly the word 'irritated' and use it in the proper context - so why not improve your presentation and the impression you give to others by using correct spellings throughout your responses?

I think some are so bad because they might use a free online translator. They are terrible. I sell items internationally & use the free translator but I KNOW to make short sentences. No adjectives. No adverbs or prepositions. Basic 1st grade sentences. That way the buyer knows what I am saying.
However If I were trying to learn a new language I would tell you to spank my knuckles because I am in class.
Maybe they don't know it is bad because they understand it.

I forgot to add this part.
How aobut tihs. Did you konw taht as lnog as the frist and lsat lteter is in the rghit pcale we can raed it and pttery fsat too if you do not let the wdros cnosufe you.
It isn't the order of the letters as long as you spell in correctly.
I think it might be rude to correct someone but it isn't rude to ask wtf do you mean.

Yes I did know that - I got the email doing the rounds...
Well if WTF isn't rude, I am MR polite himself....
I like your point above about the crappy translation software - I didn't even consider that as an option.
My response to crappy posts from now on will be:
WTF are you trying to say?? get yourself some better software!!!!
regards
Mr Polite
