Praying in a group?

I know this is going to sound silly to some but, I have always wondered. When you are praying in a group and you choose one person to pray do you try to say the words with them in your head or do you just listen? Is it like when you send someone in as the spokesmen for the group?

I listen to the prayer, I do not repeat the words at the same time, but I hear it in my mind and my heart and so I in a way say the prayer along with him. Usually it is the minister or the one who is in charge who says it, as not all of us are as eloquent, but we all agree with the prayer and hope for the results so it is as if we said it in unison.
