Yesterday, I was riding an afternoon shuttle from work to home. There was a huge traffic. I glanced at the window on my side. I noticed a gray car just parallel to the bus. There was this boy holding a rag and wiping the glass of the car. His clothes were soiled, dirt over his face and body. He's so skinny that it seemed he didn't eat for a week. After a few wipes on the windshield and on the body of the car. He knocked on the driver's seat and ask for a few peso in exchange of the poor boy's service. The driver, on his late thirties in formal attire yelled at the boy. He uttered some words but the poor boy remained his palm open and begging for a few pesos. The amn closed the door and the traffic began to move. This is not the first time I witnessed like this. There were moments when I see women with new born babies sleeping on the roadside with just the few olf papers on their back. there are lots of times when I see men rolling their Karitons (a wooden box with wooden wheels) where they place used tin cans, plastic, papers. They sell these roadside garbages to the junkshop for their living. Furthermore, crimes are on the headlines everyday.. TV, newspaper, internet.. These mediums main headlines are all crimes, accidents death and corruption.. rallies... Philippines belongs to the third world country. With exchange rate of USD1.00- Php 50.00, no doubts Filipinos are leaving the Philippines to work abroad. I wonder why? Philippines is a very beautiful country. Our temperatetropic climate with four seasons of climatic changes, is very ideal for growing all kinds of vegetables, fruits, rice corn, flowers and all kinds of crops. We have an excellent rainforest, mountains, beaches and some travel destinations included in the eight wonders of the world. We have rich natural resources, crude oil, gold, jade, and other minerals. We have a close to 90% literacy rate with English the main medium of communication and learning. This made the Philippines a perfect choice for Business Process Outsourcing. But still we are a pooor country...there are still starving Filipinos every side of the streets.. There are many who commit crimes with the main reason they are poor and they need to have themselves a living.. There are civilian forces against the government. Moro Islamic Liberation Front is the Muslim Faction fighting the Philippine Government. Theres this New People Army. Theres also these allegations from the US government that many of the Filipino men belong to the World's Most Wanted Terrorist Jemmaah Islamiya.. Are these because of themselves.. ourselves? Or should we Filipinos blame our present government and those people in the service for what happening in our country? Should our charter or our mode of government be changed? What can an ordinary citizen like me do to my fellows Filipinos and my country? Should I migrate abroad or spend my life here figuring out what can I do to the Philippines and what can my country do for me??.. (Sigh..)

I think it's because of the many cultures we have. Culture of corruption in the government, for one, like one senator said. We also have this culture of lousiness, or laziness, or "come-what-may" attitude more on the negatuve side of leaving things to fate, I believe. Yes, we can speak english but we lack true originality, in thought. I believe filipinos are no lower than any race in the world, just as I believe we don't have to flatter ourselves with fancies. we're no better than any other people as well. We must not be cultic about Pacquiao or any other celebrities, beauty queen, or religious leader. We must be enlightened by learning. I believe the Philippines should not be worshippers of those day-dreamings. Why a small country as Taiwan, where common folks barely understands simple english is far better than us in terms of economy?why I dont see people here starve in the streets, no squatters. Most of the large companies here which filipinos work for are owned by its residents, unlike us,by multinationals doing "business" with us. we're happy with BPO's, call centers,GMA stress on great help of those many times. It's good if it's our way of starting, if our government as well as the whole nation understand the meaning of unity. If we have one common goal. What is it? We're divided as our islands. I believe in a neighborhood, or in a barangay, there is no such thing as unity in achieving one goal. Many times theyre the very people who destroy each other if one seems to start to succeed. Maybe we can't blame ourselves. There's too much pressure on us now. everyone of us, I believe. The world is changing fast and we have to move along. Regarding those in the farthest region, Mindanao, mostly heard of them are these things because they're separated from us in faith. Not only because they call god in other name, but aren't they the farthest region to reach by our trying mother government? there are diversities deeper than etnicity. But if from the start we have known the meaning of justice, of love, of truth, maybe Philippines, with it's own gifts from nature, could be a paradise.

I can see that you have a lot of concerns for us Filipinos and that is great. Your question... why are we still poor when there's a chance for us to prosper? Simply because of graft and corruption. I can't blame the man that didn't give money to the boy who clean his windows, it's because syndicate are now using kids to earn money. In regards with the NPA, terrorists... I think we really need unity. The government must be sensitive enough to their needs. Peace talk!!! We need PEACE TALK!!!
