I just saw on the news that some brands of peanut butter are being recalled. The reason? Salmonella poisoning has happened with it. According to the news this is the first time Salmonella has been linked to peanut butter. The two brands involved are Peter Pan and Great Value (Wal-mart brand). They want you to check the top of the jar for a number beginning with this: 2111 and if it has that then to return it. For more information you can read the article at: http://news.yahoo.com/s/wisn/20070216/lo_wisn/11026055

I bought a jar of this lot of the Great Value. I just wrote a post on this myself. My child has been sick for months sometimes its worst than others. Its developed into intestional problems. I am taking my jar to be tested and if that is what is making my daughter sick, I'm going to a lawyer. I won't be sending the lid back, because I am planning on seeking legal advice. I suggest anyone who hasn't gotten better on their own like my child seek legal advice to. By sending the lid in for a refund you are agree with them its okay to poison your family as long as they refund your money.

Well you do what you need to do. I think a lot of it is going to be based on how it got contaminated. From what I saw they were still investigating.

I live in St Louis and it was just on the news that 15 new cases of salmonella were confirmed just today from the peanut butter. I also heard that apparently the jars got the salmonella at some plant in georgia i think where its made or put in the jars or something. Whatever your child has Avon i hope she gets better soon.

I think this is SAD! They said like 400 or so people reported it. Icky to that one. I used to use Peter Pan sometimes as a kid. I am just grateful I only use Jiff now. Yeah I heard about this last night. Go check if you use either. The wal*mart version MUST be the cheaper version thus the similiarty with the problems. Be careful out there people!

Yeah they are made by the same parent company. At least it's not like spinach and most from the same company.

Thank you for the heads up on this..I had seen it on the News, but we always buy Skippy Peanut Butter. Now I'm wondering is how it got into peanut butter as you never hear of Salmonella getting into peanut butter. I'm sure it will come out on the News on how. You begin to wonder who in the world is working in our factories that aren't clean or doing the proper job of making sure the machines are clean. I'm sure there will be many Law suits out of this one...Makes you wonder how safe it is for us and our kids today on what to eat anymore...

I know what you mean. I seldom watch the news but it was on last night because I couldn't find the remote. So I got to hear about it. I figured that was something I'd want to know about so posted it up here. I'm sure there will be some lawsuits. A lot depends on what comes out from the investigation as to how responsible the company is.

Wow! That is really scary! It seems like so many foods have been getting recalled lately, like when we had the scare with the spinach, and then there was another one too recently...some kind of egg salad that was sold at gas stations and some supermarkets. But now peanut butter! That's creepy! And those two are brands that a lot of people buy. I will make sure we don't have any of that in our house, and I'll check in houses of children I babysit as well! Thanks for making everyone aware of this!

You're very welcome. I know it gets you wondering. I know we check dates on things and watch out for the different things we buy to make sure they are all right but you never think to worry about peanut butter. I know I never did. I will now though.

I don't either normally. Just couldn't find the remote to turn it and heard about it. Kind of glad I didn't find it right off now.

Once I heard about that, I looked on my peanut butter jar, but it was not infected. I wonder why Walmart brand is infected too.

They are both made at the same parent company. That's why the Great Value brand is infected as well.

I seen that on the news and I just ate peter pan peanut butter yesterday. it was the last of the jar so I do not know the numbers on the lid. I threw away the empty jar. but I feel fine so hopefully it was ok. also I`m bumming out about it because peter pan is my favorite brand of peanut butter.

I almost bought some this last time but got Jif instead which right now I'm glad of. I prefer Peter Pan as well normally but right now kind of glad that I decided to go with the competition. It's scary as to what can happen. You never know with things. I'm sure if you've been eating it right along and it just finished the jar then I would think it would be alright.

I heard this on the news this morning. But thank you for starting a discussion on it. It reminded me to look into further and hopefully it will help someone else too.

Well I know myself I'm not big on watching the news and this is pretty important. One normally doesn't think about peanut butter.

Wow! I have never heard of peanut butter being recalled! How does a company that manufactures peanut butter get salmonella poisoning in peanut butter? And if it effects these two brands. Does this mean that Peter Pan is the same manufacturer of Great Value for WalMart? No wonder I don't like generic peanut butter. I only like Jiff. :) So, my peanut butter is ok. But thanks for the news! That is a new one for me.

My mom IM'd me about it because she has Peter Pan but she's had it for a while now. They don't eat it a lot so she's had it for some time and she said she kept it in the fridge so hopefully it's ok. Normally we buy Peter Pan or the Wal-Mart but not this time. I got Jiff and we have a jar from Doller General, thank goodness. They are made by the same parent company. I'd never heard of this happening before either. I've heard of it with other foods but not peanut butter. It's weird.

this is the 2nd time that peter pan and great value peanute butter has been recalled due to salmonella, and if you mail in the lids to the company, they will refund your money in full, also some stores are also excepting the lids in return to get a new jar of peanut butter or your money. here is a link for the recall site, has many products on it that are recalled, sad that many of us do not even know about this. www. recall.gov/recent. html

Peter Pan is the only brand I buy.. It's the creamiest. Low and behold I went home and checked my jars last night--- Each one started with 2111... Drat. We've been eating it for a month now-- No sickness... Still I threw them out- Off limits- No way am I taking that chance.. for me or my family. Will I buy Peter Pan again? NO! I bet this will cost the company some major money and alot of customers. they need to be more aware of their processing plants. Looks like I'll be a choosy mom-- Jif!

I have the feeling it will too at least for now. I'm really glad I haven't boughten any in a while. My mom though had a jar so she has to deal with that. It's scary. You don't think of peanut butter as a food you have to check on.

I read this one too. It's interesting because peanut butter is something I don't think people ever worry about. Scary. My husband is now so paranoid he won't eat the peanut butter we already have, even though it isn't one of those brand. *shakes her head*

Heheh well I can understand that. Once you hear something might be a problem you have a tendency to look at similar items wondering if it too could be a problem.

Thanks for sharing this information. I hadn't heard about it and although I do not have either of those brands in my house I do believe my mother may have the Walmart brand. I'll be sure to pass it on.

Yes it is dreadful when people put salmonella or some other poisoning in our foods and then they have to be recelled. I have never heard of salmonella in our food for peanut butter but for other products I have. But I do think that it was great of you just incase some people living in the United States did not get a chance to hear the latest news

I'm so glad you posted this. I was about to do my grocery shopping tomorrow, and Great Value peanut butter was on my list. Guess I have to go check that bottle of peanut butter I got in December. What food product will we have recalled next? Butter? Milk? Water?
