in today's world, you need atleast 512 mb ddr ram. it will be enough if you work on office tools, intenet surfing, low graphic games, etc. but if you are a hardcore gamer, you want to encode audio/video files then atleast 1gb ram is your need. now world is moving ahead very swiftly. 256mb is the lowest thing anyone can have. if you have low budget then atleast try to get 256mb more ram so that you can obtain 512mb ram with acceptable performance. right now my laptop has 512mb ddr2 @ 667fsb but i'm upgrading it to 1gb ddr2 very soon. because its a need of future applications and games.

I would any day prefer a computer with 512 Ram or even higher as it would make the computer future proof. Just imagine people have to upgrade their pc's or buy new pc's just to install the new Windows Vista. Now that is too funny, and it makes more sense to get a lot of extra Ram installed in the computer, it makes your computer faster, you can easily load lot of softwares, play games and surf the Internet without worrying about memory constraints. Also, not much money can be saved by thinking that Ram prices would reduce, because unlike Processors, Ram prices do not fall easily and remain stable.

well it depends on which computer you are using and it is obvious that every person will take the 512 MB RAM it like an example that if you get a chance of getting 5 or 10 doller will you take five? But if you have a money problem then you can take 256 as an substitute.

Anyone will prefer any bigger ram can have. Why you choose the 250MB RAM over the 512 MB RAM? I start with 128 before 6 years when I buy my first PC.I change it with 512 after 1 year. Before 15 month I buy new computer with 2 GB RAM and I see the hugeeeeee different from the first moment

I think you should get the highest amount of RAM that your computer will be able to use. Obviously though if money is a problem, you need to work out how much better it will be for you and whether it is worth the extra cost.

Off course 512 DDR2, but it depends on the main board also as some old boards does not support, and pliz check the Frequency MHz of your new RAM if you are looking to get a new one. It should match the old ram and also the main board support. Another reason to have 512 is Vista.. won't you looking to test on your pc.

these day, most of the software require higher memory. so the higher ofcoz the better. if you don't have enough budget, 512mb is enough. if you want the better choice is upgrade to 2GB memory.
