i deffinately believe that we have animal totems as well as spirit guides! i often dream of my totems. for a few years i was having dreams of snakes around the 10th and 20th of each month.. i couldnt for the life of me figure out why i kept dreaming of them, until a few weeks ago when i came across this great website about totem animals.. it had mentioned something about when new totems come to use, they often have to make sure we are really willing to have them as a totem. after looking at some of the things snake symbolizes, i realized that i was merely having a very diffucult time accepting some aspects of snake for my totem animal. after i made a councious decision to accept snake as my totem the dreams have stoped!

Snake is a personal totem of my own, I didn't have any difficulty. Many cultures do not vilify the snake as the western christian culture does, but acepts it for its power, its ability to transform, the letting go of the old to accept the new is a strong symbolic meaning of the snake, that the dream kept coming to you so often could very well also mean that you are in a time of transition or that you do need to let go of something old, either situation, condition, or ideal, to make way for the new. Oddly enough I never watch movies about snakes, since in those movies they are always the villians, and this just is uncomfortable for me, I never realized this until now, that I had avoided such movies like anaconda, not because of the horror aspect but because I didn't see the snake in that role. Which is odd considering that I am aware that many snakes are quite deadly, and dangerous. If you get the chance check out Medicine Cards it is a book and cards but you may be able to find the book itself in your library, the meaning of snake in this book can help bring understanding. Have you read any books on Animal totems?

i actually own the medicine cards :) arent they just wonderful? i have also read ted andrews book "animal magick" and id like to read his book called "animal speak" as well! the whole letting go of the past and moving on was the aspect of snake i was having problems accepting actually! my snake dreams started when i was about 14 years old and just now ended right before i turned 25! when i fist started having the dreams they made me scared of snake! in the dreams the snakes were always killing ppl, and i was frequently being bitten by them! around the age of 18 i had a dream where snakes were killing an entire town.. a masked serpent came to me removed his mask and said "we are not here to harm you!" after that dream i started feeling a little bit more comfortable with snakes again though still affraid of being bitten. after that the snake dreams were often very pleasant as the snakes would talk to me and help me, though i would still have dreams of being bitten! the last few snake dreams i had, snake was always hungry and trying to eat only my hand! if you are interested in reading any of my snake dreams you can find them here www.myspace.com/mythsspace in my blog i have an entry where i posted just one year of my snake dreams.

This does sound interesting, I can understand that but sometimes killing and such does not have the negative meaning it would in the waking world. My sister kept having a nightmare that involved killing, the stabbing or killing in some way with a knife, when she realized she wasn't really afraid in the dream when it was happening she began to see it was about the ending, cutting away or slicing apart of the old, She had a choice to make hold on to status quo or try for a change, the dream helped her realize to take the change. It is interesting how sometimes though those endings, of the old come to us in dreams as killings, I think this happens because the killing is a forced situation, as if to say it is happening the change is here deal with it. rather than you have choices, make one. And yes those cards are wondeful if you are ever looking for a quick reference online http://p199.ezboard.com/bspiritlodge83569 They have a reference section for many spirit animals that you may not have in some of the books. For instance the Manatee is of importance to me, and can be found there but is almost always overlooked by authors on this subject. Steven Farmer has some interesting books out as well.
