abuse: female on male

i just got news from a close friend that he had to call the cops on his girlfriend because she beat him up! my friend is a big guy (6'5"), but i guess doesn't defend himself too well. i was shocked to hear this news, as he never struck me as the type to take abuse, especially not from a girlfriend. when i talked to him about it, he said 'well i probably deserved it' and 'well, she sometimes gets...pushy'. he sounded exactly like a stereotypical battered wife, defending her abusive husband with lines like 'oh, he was having a bad day' or 'he only beats me when he's drunk'. when the cops came, he apparently asked them to go, and told them the virtues of them NOT bringing his girlfriend in to be booked, that it would ruin her life, etc. so this goes to show that just because you are a big male, you should NOT expect nobody will dare hurt you. it also shows that spousal abuse is not a one-way street, ie: most people are used to hearing about women being beat up by husbands but how often do we hear (or admit knowing) about men being abused by women? please disregard, for the purpose of discussion, refering to male-male or female-female couples, because it has already been discussed on mylot....the stereotypes DO bleed into the world of gay relationships, and no matter how many folks think this is "weird" or impossible, i have heard/seen the worst spousal abuse go on between 2 girls, and i had a male friend who told me how he and his ex-boyfriend were so violent when they fought that they ended up breaking furniture and doorframes. so i am not denying that this happens, but for the sake of discussion, please give me your thoughts ONLY on men being abused by their female partner. any comments on what happened to my friend are welcome too!
