What is some basic information on the fundamentals of converting and transfering heat into energy?

All steam engines and IC engines are examples of heat engines only. The heat energy is used for crating a high pressure in a closed cylinder which because of exapnsion of gas pushes the piston there by creating a power for some mechanical work. The subject being too vast is beyond the scope for discussing it over here, hence I will request your attention towards the books from "Heat engines".
