Why a Dozen Counts Twelve (12)?

I want to know the fact, why a dozen is always counted as twelve (12)? There are other numbers in our decimal number system as, 5, 10, 15... But besides these numbers, twelve (12) is chosen as one dozen. Will you justify it for my query?
