Is WalMart really a good store or business?

Chloe the pit bull service dog - this dog was denied access to help her owner at Walmart. guess it was against the law for managers to tell her to leave.

A lady with a service dog went into WalMart to shop. Two manager told her to please leave. She tried to stand on her rights and they said that because there were young children were in the store and her service dog breed is a vicious and unstable animals they wished her to go. She stated her legal rights and that what they were asking her was illegal and still they told her to go. Did it matter that the service dog is an American Pit Bull Terrier? The dog's name is Chloe. Check her out at www.chloethepitbull.com

I was just talking to a friend the other day because I had said that we take our new puppy into WalMart with us and no one has ever said anything to us. Our new puppy is a mini Dachshund...and we do not feel comfortable with leaving her at home with our big Basset Hound pup. So, we take her everywhere...including Walmart and we have never been asked to leave! AND she is not a service dog! It is stupid to me that they would not allow the service dog no matter the breed into a store!

I agree, the dog had a training and they would not allow a service dog that was aggressive. So yes they were wrong. Thanks for responding.

What the managers did was illegal. I hope she sues Wal-Mart for everything she can get. The definition of a service dog is a dog specifically trained to provide a service to someone with a disability. Our male sheltie is trained to lead my autistic son out of the store if he melts down. We have never been denied entrance with the dog, but if we had been, we would have sought legal action. I hope this woman is standing up for her rights and those of her service animal.

I agree and have signed a petition against WalMart through the Care2.com site I belong to. We wish to support her and seek penalties for Walmart. They need better educated and through the wallet might be the most effective way! Thanks much for responding.

To answer the first question - No, Walmart is not a good buisness or store. I hate that place. I think they do have cause for concern. Even under their ownership responsiblities it states as their number one commandment : 1. Thou shalt NEVER trust thy Pit Bull not to fight. And added to the fact that the person who owns the service dog may not (due to disabilities) be am to control the dog in a situtation where he/she may act out against something he/she feels is a threat - it's understandable. But if it's their rights - it's their right. I also wonder if they're were any events that lead up to the management asking her to leave. It didn't say (that I seen). However why choose a dog breed that will be a cause for concern?

Like our men, we often don't get to choose the animal that we end up sharing our lives with. This dog was certified and I wonder what the deal was with the Little Rascals show and their pitbull back in the day. It is true that we do not have all the information, however, it is enough for me to know that the dog was certified and wore its vest and there are laws governing this situation! Thanks much for responding.

As a proud owner of a pit bull I am disgusted by their actions. As a former wal-mart employee, I am not surprised, and As a parent, I am confused as to what I think I would do! (: Just because a dog is a pit bull does not mean it is anymore unstable than any other dog, in fact, smaller dogs, like terriers, are usually a lot more aggressive, but because of their size, they don't do much damage. I have two little boys, and we've had 2 pit bulls. The first one was sick when the oldest came along, and even though she wasn't feeling good, she never ONCE showed aggression towards our son, even when he was pulling her tail, taking food from her dish etc. But having said that, I am often leery of all dogs around my children, and don't just trust them because they look nice. My sister in law (11 years old) was attacked/mauled by a pit bull and had to have plastic surgery to cover most of the scars, although many still remain. I think in this situation, walmart should have said, we will have someone walk with you if you don't mind, so we can keep an eye on the dog, as many of our customers may be frightened of her, because of the breed she is. I don't think they should be kicking people out, I thought their bottom line was to make money. (: Not very good press for walmart! (I'm sure someone is getting fired)

I think walmart is a HORRIBLE STORE. They kill the mom and pop shops that, to me, are more unique, provide better service and are better for the community. They don't pay their employees well, they don't clean their stores, and they don't treat anyone very well. Sam Walton STARTED the store on a good idea - every day low prices and US MADE PRODUCTS. now they look for the cheapest garbage they can buy from any where in the world - OFTEN FROM SWEAT SHOPS AND CHILD LABOR. THEY DISGUST ME, and I have never once, nor will I ever set foot in any of their stores.

Well for someone who has never ever stepped foot into a walmart store you sure know a lot about them! I shop at walmart because its my choice, ive never had an issue with any of there stores, of course there employess dont earn money, what do you expect with a only a high school education or lower? But if this were true about the dog and the managers then im sure they will be fired for there actions.

By all means, everybody should exercise their rights. But with the exercise of your rights you have also stepped on the rights of others, then i guess that right cease to be a right at that particular situation. Everybody, including children has the right to a safe and clean environment. There are people and kids who are allegic to dogs. Dogs could still get unstable and anything can upset them in such a public place. Walmart also has the right to impose policies that would protect their business and its customers.

Walmart is a disgrace on all levels, and The staffordshire is a very reliable lovely animal. If they are an official servie dog they can be trusted. Walmart employess are more "unstable" than they are. I used to work in the sporting goods dept at a walmart and I was an animal control officer, so I'm not just whistling dixie.

When I read your post the first thing that came to mind was "how typical of a Walmart". I've had nothing but bad experiences at those stores and avoid them all together. Don't they care about customer service, or is it all about the money?

I do have to agree with you that's it's all about the money. We had a very bad snow storm where i live on feb.14th and they never shut down our wal-mart. You wouldn't believe how they made the worker's come into work. I had to work that day and when i left my car was barried by all of the snow. I couldn't find the car in the parking lot. We where in a state of emergince and our district maniger wouldn't give the order to close so that we didn't have to risk the worker's or customer's lives for them to go out on the roads. We ended up with 33 inches of snow from that storm and we are still trying to recover from it. I'm very very mad that we where not able to stop people from driving on the roads when they where that bad. All that the higher up's could think of was how we needed to stay open to make money. It was very rude.

Jamie I hear you and concur. We had a mall do the same thing here and the highway patrol said we could get a fine for driving. the employees had to go to a hotel nearby. Spend their own money. It was awful. Walmart and store managers everywhere need to tend to the real businss and that is the employees and customers. Thanks so much for responding.

first I want to say i'm not a Walmart fan either, and I don't agree with the way they handled the lady with her service dog. I have two pit bull mixes myself and they have been loving pets and gentle to our kids. Unfortunately, there are a lot of laws against "attack breed" dogs, and pit bulls are on that list. Although I think these mandates are passed because of alot of misinformation, the fact is a lot of homeowners and business insurance policies are negated if a pit bull is on the premises. The only reason my hubby and I got decent homeowners is because I wrote the policy myself. I think the managers were probably worried that the dog would attack a patron and they'd be held liable. Unfortunately, this is going to cause them more hassle than if they just would've let her shop.

they can't legally prove that the dog is a pitbull, and it doesn't matter what kind of service dog it is. Service dog or no service dog, it is illegal for them to kick her out of the store because she has a disability, if the dog is registered with the lions club of whatever country, it is illegal and she could sue walmart. I have never seen a service dog in walmart before, but I never known of any store to have told a handicapped person with a service dog to leave. They use golden retrievers for service dogs as well, and stats say that there have been more attacks and bites from golden retrievers in north america than any other dog breed, ever.

Walmart is a horrible store, their products usually break in a few days. You find most of their things lying on the floor without their packaging. They make it obvious that their products have been returned, the stuff is taped up like crazy . I bought a DVD player from them, the wires were missing.

ok i have to stand up for wal-mart some time. The way products look and the way that they are sold is the way the store is run. The store that i work into dosn't have boxes that are all busted up and taped, or packages all over the floors, yes some stuff get's returned but we have a very strict return policy at my store. We also have 4 people who clean the store all day long and all of our associates in our store make sure that every thing is up off the floors so that no one gets hurt. We work very hard to keep our store clean and neat and the products the same way so that the customer's come back looking for more. This is the way that our store maniger likes to run things. Like a nice oiled machine. We get paid pretty good money for the area that we live in. I'm getting paid about $9 an hour and i'm just a cashier. If i went to working over nights then i would be gettin $10 an hour. So if my area thats a pretty good pay check. Now i don't know how the other stores treat their employees but mine is pretty good. Our managers are always out working on the floor and if a customer needs help they are always willing to help them out. This is the way that sam walton wanted it to be in the first place. I'm sorry but reading how every one had all of these bad experiances at wal-mart just mad it so that i had to speak out. It's all how the store that you go to is runed. It's not all of the stores that are like that.

I hate to be walmart at the moment. I went to the site, that you had the link to. Chole is a beautiful pit bull. I have seen different color pits in my lifetime, but I have never seen a white one with gold spots. I signed the form along with Chole's guestbook. Pitbulls will never have a good repratation thanks to all the idiots in this world that trained them to fight. I have a neighbor across the street that rescued 2 pits. They have two small kids, and those dogs love those kids. The male loves anyone that will pet him. he's a huge baby.

OK, was the animal wearing a cloak with service animal on it or had a picture ID hanging from its collar with the same? If so, Wal-Mart was wrong. Then again, according to the ADA: Under the Americans with Disabilities (ADA), privately owned businesses that serve the public, such as restaurants, hotels, retail stores, taxicabs, theaters, concert halls, and sports facilities, are prohibited from discriminating against individuals with disabilities. The ADA requires these businesses to allow people with disabilities to bring their service animals onto business premises in whatever areas customers are generally allowed. The ADA defines a service animal as ANY guide dog, signal dog, or other animal individually trained to provide assistance to an individual with a disability. If they meet this definition, animals are considered service animals under the ADA regardless of whether they have been licensed or certified by a State or local government.

Im not sure about Walmart as I live in Australia and we dont have that chain here. But in the case of the dog,I think they are also classed as a dangerous dog breed here too. I know all dogs are there own dog, like people, they have different attitudes and personalities etc.,but I think if they are going as far as to class the dog a dangerous breed then maybe it makes people more wary and they will avoid the store, thus costing Walmart money. In my opinion, its sad that they cant just let someone do there shopping in peace for an hour or so. Maybe while shopping she could put a muzzle on the store owner.....oops I meen the dog ;) just to keep everyone happy and safe, wonder if theyd have a problem with that?

Wal-Mart is truly a horrible place. That said, it is a place of business. Any business has the right to refuse service to any person for legitimate reason. Customer safety and welfare concerns are legitimate reasons. Your situation, however, may fall into the category of discrimination based on disability. I would seek legal advice.

My parents in law and wife really hate walmart because one, it's dirty usually, and two, they offer terrible health care to their workers, and three, they promote over seas manufacturing which hurts US jobs. So they're really against it. Everybody else I know though loves them for their cheap prices.

I don't think it's right that they asked the lady to leave if it's a service dog. You know wal-mart has been getting under my skin lately about certain thing's. Not to get into any details but it used to be one of my fave store's. Just because the dog was a pit bull doesn't give them the right to make her leave the store. I'm sure also that the dog being a service dog would not turn vicious or violent towards anyone because their trained to be a certain way.
